Kempner Street Construction, Wood Street Closure Expected Jan. 30

Realignment of Kempner Street needed to accommodate the closure of the Wood Street railroad crossing.

SUGAR LAND, TX --The City of Sugar Land announce Monday that they are expected to start construction to realign Kempner Street, between Main Street and Wood Street is expected to begin the week of Jan. 30.

The realignment is necessary to accommodate the closure of the Wood Street railroad crossing, which was required by Union Pacific Railroad to accommodate a new crossing at University Boulevard.

The extension of University Boulevard across U.S. 90A and the railroad tracks will accomplish the long-planned "Burney Road Bypass" project, an important north-south corridor that provides for the mobility of residents north of U.S. 90A while alleviating traffic in residential areas along Main Street and Burney Road.

When complete, Kempner Street's connection to Main Street will be located north of the current intersection. Kempner will be temporarily closed during construction, and motorists will be diverted north on Main Street.

The project will also include modifications to the intersection at U.S. Highway 90A and Savoy.
