Sugar Land Preps For Annexation Of Greatwood, New Territory Communities

SUGAR LAND, TX — Sugar Land continues to prepare for the annexation of Greatwood and New Territory on the effective annexation date of Dec 12 at 12:01 a.m.

The annexation process began in November 2007 and is a result of thoughtful, deliberate planning; public input; and strong partnership between the city and elected officials in the communities.

In preparation for annexation, the city continues to execute an extensive public outreach effort to provide information on what current and future residents can expect. The city hosted six open house events featuring city representatives from various departments offering information on a variety of topics from solid waste services to the new 311 Sugar Land customer service program.

Future residents also enjoyed Skeeters games on special Community Nights at Constellation Field and participated in Sugar Land's National Night Out, an event to promote police-community partnerships.

To ensure that all residents, future and current, continue to receive high-quality service, the city increased staffing levels, including 22 public works personnel, 21 police officers, seven firefighter-paramedics and one fire inspector. Fire Station 6, located in Greatwood, will receive a new ambulance to provide ambulance services to Greatwood and New Territory.

Funding for the expansion of city services to the annexed areas comes from service charges accumulated over 10 years from the residents of Greatwood and New Territory.

Annexation will not increase costs, taxes or impact city services for current city residents.

As the effective date of annexation approaches, the city will continue to provide opportunities for future residents and businesses to learn about city-wide standards and expectations.
