UT-Austin Stabbing Victim Recovers At Parent’s Katy Area Home

Victim recounts feeling someone place their hand hand on his shoulder, before feeling punch to his lower back.

KATY, TX — A University of Texas student who was one of four students stabbed during a knife attack on the campus on Monday, was released from the hospital Wednesday and is back home in Katy.

Stuart Bayliss, 20, was stabbed in the back as he left the gym on campus Monday afternoon.

Bayliss, who stood in front of his parents home, said he felt a hand on his shoulder and what he thought was a punch to his lower back.

He turned and looked into the eyes of fellow UT-Austin student Kendrex White, who had a calm demeanor.

Bayliss said he grabbed the blade of the knife, which sliced his hand when White pulled the knife from Bayliss’ back.

White is accused of stabbing fellow UT-Austin student Harrison Brown to death, and stabbing three other other students outside Gregory Gym.

White was quickly detained, and taken into custody after the knife attack.

“We are all in mourning, and we are hurting as a university community,”
University of Texas at Austin President Gregory L. Fenves said during a Tuesday press conference.

Meanwhile, Bayliss, who is a member of UT-Austin’s ROTC program, and has a commitment to become a U.S. Marine Corps officer after graduation, said he went into protection mode after he was stabbed and tried to warn others around him.

"We're always talking with my CO (commanding officer) that you're not a bystander anymore. We are here to serve the people," Bayliss said Wednesday.

Bayliss will take about a month to heal from his wounds, and will require physical therapy to regain full use of his hand.

He plans to return to the university in the fall, as a junior.
