• Waco ISD raises tax rate 0.8 cents to fund $179 million budget (star-telegram.com) — Waco ISD has approved a $1.035 per $100 tax rate—0.8 cents higher than last year—to fund a $179.1 million budget for the 2026–27 school year, with actual bills depending on your home's valuation. Despite a small deficit, the district is boosting pay for staff while facing lower property values, enrollment declines, and looming state and federal funding cuts. Trustees adopted the maximum rate allowed without triggering a voter election.
• Waco Police department confirms it is not currently using flock cameras (kwtx.com) — Waco police say they are not using Flock license plate cameras, despite other Central Texas departments buying them with state grant funds. Instead, WPD relies on other automated license plate recognition tools to help find suspect vehicles, missing people, and stolen cars while stressing the technology's investigative benefits. Residents may notice ALPR use without Flock-branded systems on local streets.
• Data Shows Texas Remains Center of Patent Litigation Universe (texaslawbook.net) — Texas continues to dominate U.S. patent litigation, and Waco's federal courthouse has been a major driver of that trend under Judge Alan Albright. With Albright leaving the bench and new judges in Waco and Austin lacking deep patent experience, lawyers expect filings to shift and are watching how Western District patent cases will be handled next. The changes could reduce Waco's role as a patent hotspot.
