Today's riddle: What has a cap but no head? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Waco is getting wealthier — but housing is getting harder to afford (baylorlariat.com) — Waco's rapid growth in high-income households is driving up housing costs, leaving many local residents spending more than 30% of their income on rent and struggling to find affordable homes. Mission Waco's new Creekside Community Village, backed partly by city funding and local churches, is offering low-cost, community-focused housing for people exiting homelessness and plans a major expansion to house hundreds more Wacoans.
2. Changes could be coming to Waco Solid Waste services (fox44news.com) — Waco residents on Wednesday and Friday trash routes may see new pickup days and options for keeping or returning their green yard-waste carts, with changes starting this month. The city says combining routes will cut costs and limit future rate hikes, trimming a planned 2027 increase from $1.41 to $0.41 per month. Holiday weeks will also push Waco trash pickup back one day.
3. Breast Cancer Awareness Month: A Previvor's Fight (fox44news.com) — A Waco mother in her early 30s chose a preventive double mastectomy after genetic testing revealed a high BRCA-related risk and a scare on her first mammogram. Her story, shared for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, underscores the emotional toll of surgery, the importance of knowing family history, and her plea for Waco women to talk with doctors about early screening and genetic testing options.
4. Structure fire displaces one, two pets on Johnson Street in Waco (kwtx.com) — A house fire on the 600 block of Johnson Street in Waco heavily damaged a home Friday afternoon, collapsing the attic and roof and forcing one resident and two pets to work with the Red Cross for temporary housing. About a dozen Waco Fire crews and Waco police responded, one firefighter was hospitalized for a heat-related issue, and nearby roads were blocked while hotspots were extinguished.
5. Waco tool shop burglarized; co-owner says thieves stole $2,000 in tools (kxxv.com) — A long-time Waco business, Regian Tool and Home, was burglarized early Friday when two suspects smashed a glass door and stole about $2,000 in tools. The co-owner, whose partner is Waco-born, says the loss hits especially hard for a single-location small business already facing slow sales, and she's urging other local shops to double-check their security systems while Waco police continue investigating.
