Heart O' Texas Fair & Rodeo opens in Waco with concerts, rodeo events and family attractions (kcentv.com) — The Heart O' Texas Fair & Rodeo is now underway at the Extraco Events Center in Waco, running through Oct. 18 with concerts, rodeo competitions, carnival rides, and family attractions. Organizers say the event draws over 200,000 visitors, pumps business into Waco hotels and restaurants, and channels nearly $500,000 a year into scholarships and awards for Central Texas youth.
2. Randy Klein named news director at KCEN (newscaststudio.com) — A new news director is taking over at KCEN, the NBC affiliate serving the Waco market, with veteran TV news executive Randy Klein set to start November 9. Klein, who has decades of experience in digital and newsroom leadership across Texas and Florida, says he aims to deepen KCEN's connection with Central Texas viewers and make the station a first stop for local news.
3. Former Waco Salad and Go acquired out of Chapter 11 auction by Sipside 1 LLC (kwtx.com) — A former Salad and Go site at 723 S. Sixth St. in Waco has been bought out of bankruptcy by Sipside 1 LLC, which plans a drive-thru drink-and-snack concept but has not yet filed permits locally. Another former Salad and Go on Hewitt Drive, already sold earlier to 7 Brew, is undergoing a major renovation into a drive-thru-only coffee shop slated for completion by late November.
4. Against Impossible Odds: Waco Teen Thrives 17 Years After Micro-Preemie Birth (kwtx.com) — A Waco teen, Maya Kathryn Donaldson, is thriving 17 years after being born a micro-preemie at just over 23 weeks, despite serious medical challenges and later diagnoses of visual impairment and autism. Now a high school junior, she plays bass drum in marching band, attends mainstream classes, and spends summers performing with Waco Children's Theatre, supported by her family and local medical teams.
5. Rising diesel prices are squeezing local restaurants, McLennan County bakery owner says it's hitting hard (kxxv.com) — A longtime Waco bakery owner says soaring diesel prices are sharply increasing the cost of ingredients delivered by truck, forcing menu changes and squeezing profits after 26 years in business. He worries small mom-and-pop restaurants around McLennan County may struggle to compete, even as he hopes new state diesel rules will eventually ease some of the pressure.
