Harmony Science Academy-Waco Turns Reading Into Campuswide Experience, Boosting Participation and Attendance

A campuswide literacy initiative at Harmony Science Academy-Waco is transforming how students engage with reading, turning a traditional classroom activity into a high-interest, shared experience that is driving both participation and attendance.

What began as an extension of in-class silent reading has evolved into quarterly “silent reading parties” that now involve the entire campus. Participation has grown significantly throughout the school year, increasing from 148 students at the first event to 572 students during the most recent gathering.

Campus leaders say the initiative is helping build stronger reading habits while creating excitement around literacy. On April 6, the school recorded a 98.15% attendance rate, the highest of the year, reflecting strong student engagement tied to the event.

“The purpose of the silent reading parties is to build excitement around reading and encourage students to develop independent reading habits in a fun, engaging environment,” said Jill Remine, Dean of Academics. “By creating a memorable experience, students begin to see reading as something they enjoy.”

Held during the school’s early morning period, the events transform shared spaces into calm, low-light reading environments. What started in the gym has expanded across hallways and common areas, allowing all grade levels to participate at the same time.

Students bring books, blankets and pillows, settling into self-selected spaces to read independently alongside their peers. The unique setting, which includes low lighting and ambient effects, helps create a focused, distraction-free atmosphere.

“I was surprised that all the students were fully engaged in reading as I walked through the space,” Remine said. “It reinforced how important the environment is in helping students connect with their books.”

Originally limited to upper elementary grades, the initiative quickly expanded schoolwide due to strong student interest. Leaders say the program has already prompted additional reading events beyond the original schedule.

Students say the experience makes reading more enjoyable and personal.

“I liked the little lights and that it was quiet,” said Estrella F., a fifth-grade student.
“I got to read in the dark and bring my blanket,” added Cora K., a first-grade student. “It was fun and made me happy.”

By combining structure with creativity, Harmony Science Academy-Waco is reinforcing its focus on student-centered learning while strengthening literacy skills in an engaging, scalable way.
