Injured Woodlands Football Star is Moved Home as Teammates Prep for State Championship Game

Milton spent two weeks in a coma, recovering from brain surgery.

THE WOODLANDS, TX -- A local high school football player who suffered a brain injury during a playoff game in Waco last month, has been transferred to a medical facility in The Woodlands to begin his next phase of care.

Grant Milton, a senior at The Woodlands High School, had emergency brain surgery shortly after the Highlanders state playoff game against Austin Bowie at Baylor University’s McLane Stadium on Nov. 26.

Milton, who wears number 21 for The Woodlands Highlanders, was taken from the game by ambulance during the fourth quarter of a Class 6A Division I, region semifinal high school football playoff game.

He spent more than two weeks in a coma, with his progress documented daily on the online CaringBridge web page.

The news of Milton’s injury drew the attention of Houston Texans Superstar J.J. Watt, who donated $10,000 to the family to pay for medical expenses, which ultimately topped out at more than $135,000 to the Milton’s GoFundMe account.

On Tuesday, Grant’s father, Miles Milton shared the news on the CaringBridge webpage that his son was well enough to be moved closer to home.

"I'm happy to report that Grant has been successfully transferred to a medical facility in The Woodlands. His vitals are good and the next phase of his care has begun."

Meanwhile, The Woodlands Highlanders continued their quest for a state crown in the absence of Milton and will play against Lake Travis on Saturday at AT&T Stadium for the UIL Class 6A Division I championship.
