Vogel Intermediate Students Take Flight On Field Trip
iFLY, the world's largest indoor skydiving operator, showcased the power of STEM to Vogel Intermediate School students.

THE WOODLANDS, TX — Students from Vogel Intermediate had the coolest science class at iFLY Woodlands to celebrate Veterans Day.
In honor of National STEM Day, iFLY, the world’s largest indoor skydiving operator, showcased the power of STEM to Vogel Intermediate School students and educators by providing a free iSTEM camp, giving them the unique opportunity to safely enjoy the thrill of flight indoors while learning about fun science and math skills.
This event was part of a larger iFLY initiative across Texas that aimed to invest in student’s futures and encourage interest in STEM-related fields. iFLY tunnels in Texas gifted local schools and organizations the STEM learning experience.

In addition to flight time for each participant, the field trip provided a unique and exciting alternative to a typical classroom experience.
Students spent time observing how objects would react in the wind tunnel based on their mass, and predicted which objects would fly first or last, based on the principles they’d observed in their classroom discussion.

Students learned that the water particles dispersed upon contact with the wind in the tunnel, much like rain!
The students from Vogel Intermediate were introduced to a skydiving term: burble, which means to disrupt the flow of air below an object.
The same principle is applied when students fly.
The instructors interrupt the airflow underneath the students to keep them at an appropriate flight height. Over 25 students took part in the field trip and took flight with the instructors.
Overall, the event was a huge success. Both students and teachers were blown away at the program. They didn’t know what to expect, but were thrilled at what their students were able to experience!
iFLY hosts these STEM camps often and we would love to have you out to the tunnel sometime to see this program in action, as there is a nationwide push for growth in the STEM industry.
