Virgin Islands PD Getting New Police Dog, Donated By Gaming Co.

Southland Gaming recently donated $43,000 to the VIPD for the purchase and training of dogs to be used as K9 officers. Woof.

ST. THOMAS, USVI — Southland Gaming of the Virgin Islands donated $43,000 to the Virgin Islands Police Department this week. The donated funds will be used to purchase and train three dogs for the VIPD's K9 Unit.

Southland Gaming supplies and operates video lottery terminals on St. Thomas and St. John. Shaine Gaspard, Southland's CEO, said he believes it is important that Southland Gaming put resources back into the Virgin Islands community, particularly for law enforcement.

Police Commissioner Trevor A. Velinor said that the donation will help build out the K9 Unit for St. Thomas and St. John. K9 officers are used as patrol partners and help with tracking, alerts and detecting drugs, explosives and accelerants and other contrabrand. They receive intensive training, both on their own and with their police handlers.
