More than 2.5 million pounds of canned meat and poultry products have been recalled due to a packaging defect that may cause the products to become contaminated without visible signs, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced Tuesday.

The products, all under Conagra Brands, Inc., from Fort Madison, Iowa, were produced between Dec. 12 and Jan. 13 and shipped to retail locations nationwide, according to the recall.

The products subject to recall have the establishment number "P4247" on the product cans, the FSIS said.

According to the FSIS, the problem was discovered when Conagra notified FSIS after observing spoiled and/or leaking cans from multiple production dates at the warehouse. The company was then able to determine that the recalled can may have been damaged "in a manner that is not readily apparent to consumers, which may allow foodborne pathogens to enter the cans."

There have been no reports of illness related to the recall to date, but anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider, the FSIS emphasized.

The FSIS is urging consumers to check their pantries and to be sure they throw away any recalled products or return them to their place of purchase.

The agency added that it routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and ensure steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.
