Nationwide Recall Of Popular Sports Beverage

The Gatorade could contain an ingredient missing from the product label.

| Updated

More than 122,000 cases of Gatorade have been voluntarily recalled after the drinks went to stores without declaring Yellow No. 5 and/or Yellow No. 6, two food color additives.

The recall covers 28-ounce bottles of Gatorade Lemon Lime, Gatorade Lemon Lime Zero, Gatorade Orange and Gatorade Orange Zero.

PepsiCo, the beverage maker, initiated the recall Sept. 25, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The recall covers products distributed across more than two dozen states, including New York, New Jersey, California, Florida, Arizona and Washington.

How Can You Tell If Your Gatorade Is Recalled?

Check the lot information printed on the bottle or packaging.

Recalled products carry specific lot codes and expiration dates, including codes ending with dates such as April 18, April 20, April 25, April 27, June 7 and June 8, 2027.

The FDA lists additional affected lot codes under recall No. H-0009-2027.

Consumers who find a bottle matching the recalled products should avoid drinking it.

The affected bottles do not list Yellow No. 5 and/or Yellow No. 6 on their ingredient labels, according to the FDA.

Food color additives commonly appear in processed foods and beverages to add or enhance color and help products maintain a consistent appearance.

Can The Dyes Make You Sick?

The FDA classified the recall as Class II, a category covering products that could cause temporary or medically reversible health effects, or products where serious health effects remain unlikely.

The agency said Yellow No. 5 and Yellow No. 6 can cause a mild rash or allergic-type asthma in uncommon cases. Reactions occur more often among people with aspirin allergies.

The recall remains ongoing. The FDA lists no termination date.
