WASHINGTON, DC — Stephen Breyer, the senior liberal justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, responded to speculation on his possible retirement, telling CNN he hasn't decided on his retirement plans and only two factors could potentially influence his decision.

"Primarily, of course, health," Breyer told CNN. "Second, the court."

Breyer, who turns 83 next month, spoke out after liberal advocates, law professors and some Democratic members of Congress have issued statements encouraging the 27-year veteran of the high court to leave the bench so President Joe Biden can appoint a younger liberal justice. Breyer said he was "especially gratified" with his role.
