Former U.S. Attorney Christina Nolan formally launched a Vermont bid for U.S. Senate, hoping to become the state's first female political export to Washington, D.C.
Nolan, 42, a Republican, is running against Democrat Peter Welch, 74, Vermont's lone congressman.

Welch is making his first bid for the upper chamber in hopes of succeeding retiring Patrick Leahy.
Nolan would be the first Republican senator to represent the Green Mountain State since Jim Jeffords, who ultimately left the party in 2001 while still in office.

Nolan acknowledged last month that she was exploring a run, but her announcement, via a campaign ad and interview with Fox News, made it official.
She could become the first woman that the tiny New England state sends to the nation's capital.
