How To Make A DIY Glitter Jar

This has to be the cheapest way to entertain your kids.

So you want to keep your kids occupied without plopping them down in front of the TV, right? Easier said than done, we know. That's why we couldn't wait to share this clever, economical craft that's taking the parenting world by storm: DIY glitter jars.

These nifty little concoctions of glitter glue, glitter and water already go by a variety of names, including "mindfulness jars" and "calm down jars." The concept is simple: Have your little one shake, shake, shake, then watch all the sparkly flecks float in circles until they settle at the bottom. Believe us, you'll be shocked at how mesmerizing a mason jar full of glitter can be.

But this DIY is more than just a distraction — teachers are using the craft as a simple way to help kids get in touch with their emotions by tasking them to focus on their thoughts as they watch the glitter swirl. Kids finish playing with their glitter jar much calmer than they started.

1. Mason Jar — You may already have one lying around that will work — just make sure it has a lid that closes tightly. You can also purchase a 16-ounce Ball Mason jar for $4.88.

2. Glitter glue— Any color will do! You can buy a 6-ounce bottle of Elmer's liquid glitter glue for $7.06 — and yes, it's washable.

3. Chunky glitter — Again, pick whatever color floats your boat. American Crafts sells multiple varieties, including this 3-ounce jar of chunky glitter in red for $4.13.

4. Fine glitter — You only need one color, but if you feel like stocking up for the future, Original Stationary sells a 24-pack of fine and flake glitter in assorted colors for just $19.90.

5. Food coloring — If you have some on hand, great, but if not, go ahead and restock your supplies! Good Cooking sells a 12-color variety kit of food coloring liqua-gels for $18.95.

Directions:

  1. Add 1 cup of hot water into your jar.
  2. Squirt in about 2 tablespoons of glitter glue.
  3. Add fine glitter until there's about a 1/2- to 3/4-inch layer on the bottom of your jar.
  4. Fill the jar the rest of the way with water. Leave about 1 inch at the top for shaking room!
  5. Add some chunky glitter on top for texture.
  6. Add a drop of food coloring.
  7. Twist your lid on so it's nice and tight.
  8. Once it's secure, get your shake on!
