Andrew McCabe Out As FBI Deputy Director: Reports

BREAKING: McCabe resigned effective on Monday, multiple media outlets reported, weeks ahead of his anticipated retirement.

WASHINGTON, DC — Andrew McCabe, the deputy director of the FBI who has been a frequent target of President Donald Trump, has reportedly resigned. He leaves office weeks before his expected retirement, which he would be eligible for in mid-March.

McCabe's resignation comes less than a year after Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey. Last week, The Washington Post reported that Trump asked McCabe shortly after Comey's firing in May who McCabe had voted for in the 2016 election. McCabe reportedly responded that he didn’t vote.

Trump also reportedly expressed outrage at McCabe over hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations that McCabe's wife received during her unsuccessful campaign for state Senate in Virginia. The donations came from a political action committee controlled by a friend of Trump's former Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

The Post reported last month that McCabe planned to retire in March, prompting Trump to tweet: "How can FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, the man in charge, along with leakin’ James Comey, of the Phony Hillary Clinton investigation (including her 33,000 illegally deleted emails) be given $700,000 for wife’s campaign by Clinton Puppets during investigation?"

Three minutes later, he added: "FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe is racing the clock to retire with full benefits. 90 days to go?!!!"

McCabe joined the FBI in 1996 in New York and focused on organized crime. He served under Comey and Robert Mueller. Mueller is now serving as special counsel and investigating possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia to meddle in the 2016 election.

As deputy director, McCabe was tasked with overseeing all FBI domestic and international investigative and intelligence activities.

NBC News first reported the revelation.
