Republicans’ defense of President Donald Trump grew more frantic and disjointed Wednesday, with House members storming a closed-door meeting, delaying the testimony of an impeachment witness as the GOP grappled with a growing abuse-of-power scandal centered on the president. The intrusion came a day after the top U.S. diplomat in Ukraine testified under oath the White House had threatened to withhold military aid unless the Ukrainian government announced investigations for Trump’s political benefit.

Pentagon Official Testifies About Withheld Military Aid To Ukraine
A Pentagon official who sought the release of U.S. military aid to Ukraine — withheld by the White House amid attempts to persuade Ukraine to investigate President Donald Trump’s political rivals — testified Wednesday to House impeachment investigators about her knowledge of the episode. Laura Cooper — the deputy assistant secretary of defense for Russia, Ukraine, and Eurasia — appeared despite an effort by the Pentagon to block her cooperation.
