Read: Trump Tower Meeting Transcripts

The Senate Judiciary Committee released 2,500 pages of documents on a 2016 meeting between Russians and top Trump campaign aides.

WASHINGTON, DC — The Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday released more than 2,500 pages of documents related to its investigation about a 2016 meeting between top Donald Trump aides and a delegation of Russians who promised to help their campaign by providing dirt on Trump's Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton.

Donald Trump Jr. initially categorized the June 9, 2016, meeting at Trump Tower in New York City as about about U.S.-Russia adoption policy. However, the transcripts reaffirm the accounts others have given about the meeting — that people in the Russian government promised explosive details about Clinton. Those details never materialized to the extent the Trump campaign had hoped.

Trump Jr., his brother-in-law Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort, then the Trump campaign's chairman, all attended the meeting with Russians, including lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya. The meeting, which lasted only about 20 minutes, has sparked questions about the role Russian interference may have played in the 2016 presidential election.

The meeting is the subject of investigations by Congress and special counsel Robert Mueller. Opposition research is a valuable asset during elections, but campaigns are barred from obtaining any form of valuable support from foreign entities.

Trump Jr. has said that he couldn't remember if he discussed the meeting with his father before it happened. In September, he told Senate investigators that he agreed to the meeting because he wanted to determine Clinton's "fitness" for office.

The meeting first became public on July 8, 2017, in a report by The New York Times. Initially, the White House said the meeting was about the adoption policy, but days later, Trump Jr. released emails that showed he took the meeting after being told he would receive damaging information on Clinton as part of a Russian government effort to aide his father's candidacy.

The release of the transcripts was authorized by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican. Grassley promised the release of the transcripts in January, telling reporters at the time: "Let’s get them on the market for everybody to see."
