Jimmy Kimmel: Senator 'Lied To My Face'

The late-night host lambasted Sen. Bill Cassidy over the latest attempt to repeal Obamacare.

Jimmy Kimmel is not pleased with Bill Cassidy. The late night host took to the airwaves Tuesday night to lambast the Republican senator from Louisiana, accusing him of having come on his show and lied.

The issue is the latest attempt to repeal Obamacare.

In May, Kimmel made headlines when he told the story of his newborn son who had had emergency heart surgery to save his life. He made an emotional plea for Congress to work together and make sure people have health care.

"If your baby is going to die, and it doesn’t have to, it shouldn’t matter how much money you make. I think that's something now, whether you're a Republican or Democrat, or something else, we all agree on that, right?" he said.

"Let's stop with the nonsense. This isn't football, there are no teams. We are the team, it’s the United States. Don't let their partisan squabbles divide us on something every decent person wants. We need to take care of each other."

Soon after, Cassidy was on his show and coined "The Jimmy Kimmel Test," saying he wouldn't pass legislation that doesn't pass Kimmel's test that everyone be covered.

"No family should be denied medical care, emergency of otherwise, because they can’t afford it," is how Kimmel summed up the senator's position. "He agreed to that.

"He said he would only support a health care bill that made sure a child like mine would get the health coverage he needs no matter how much money his parents make."

And then Cassidy introduced legislation with South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham that falls short of that.

In Kimmel's eyes — very short.

"Now, I don’t know what happened to Bill Cassidy," Kimmel said Tuesday. "But when he was on this publicity tour, he listed his demands for a health care bill very clearly. The new bill? Does none of those things.

"Not only did Bill Cassidy fail the Jimmy Kimmel test, he failed the Bill Cassidy test. He failed his own test."

In short, Kimmel said, "Bill Cassidy just lied right to my face."

Kimmel said that based on the senator's bill, there will be a new "Jimmy Kimmel test."

"With this one, your child with a preexisting condition will get the care he needs — if, and only if, his father is Jimmy Kimmel. Otherwise, you might be screwed," he said.

He added there would be a specific test for Cassidy.

"There's a new Jimmy Kimmel test for you, it's called the lie detector test," he said. "You're welcome to stop by the studio and take it anytime."

Cassidy appeared on CNN Wednesday morning, unapologetic.

"I'm sorry he didn't understand," he said of Kimmel, claiming that under his bill, "more people will have insurance."

Kimmel was far from alone in his assessment of the senator's bill.

The non-partisan Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, released an assessment of the legislation saying that it "would have the same harmful consequences as those prior bills.

"It would cause many millions of people to lose coverage, radically restructure and deeply cut Medicaid, eliminate or weaken protections for people with pre-existing conditions, and increase out-of-pocket costs for individual market consumers."

It turns out, Kimmel may have been telegraphing what was on his mind earlier in the day when he tweeted a photo of himself with his son.
