Trump Calls For AG Jeff Sessions To Stop 'Rigged Witch Hunt'

Trump called Russian collusion allegations a "TOTAL HOAX" and suggested Paul Manafort has been treated worse than Al Capone.

WASHINGTON, DC – President Donald Trump has tweeted that the country's top law enforcement official should end the Russia investigation and suggested his onetime campaign chairman — currently on trial for bank and tax fraud — has been treated worse than Al Capone. In a series of tweets Wednesday, Trump ripped the usual suspects: special counsel Robert Mueller, Hillary Clinton, former FBI Director James Comey, former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, FBI agent Peter Stzok and former FBI lawyer Lisa Page.

But the most extraordinary tweet involved Attorney General Jeff Sessions, whom Trump called on to drop the Russia probe.

"This is a terrible situation and Attorney General Jeff Sessions should stop this Rigged Witch Hunt right now, before it continues to stain our country any further," the president tweeted. "Bob Mueller is totally conflicted, and his 17 Angry Democrats that are doing his dirty work are a disgrace to USA!"

Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani told CNN the president was merely "expressing his opinion on his favorite medium, Twitter, for asserting his First Amendment rights." Giuliani stressed it was certainly not a command or directive.

"We have been saying for months that it is time to bring this inquiry to an end," Giuliani told CNN in a statement. "The President has expressed the same opinion."

Trump said Stzok — who recently testified to lawmakers about anti-Trump text messages he exchanged with Page — should've recused himself from Mueller's team on "day one."

"He was out to STOP THE ELECTION OF DONALD TRUMP," wrote Trump. "He needed an insurance policy. Those are illegal, improper goals, trying to influence the Election. He should never, ever been allowed to remain in the FBI while he himself was being investigated. This is a real issue. It won’t go into a Mueller Report because Mueller is going to protect these guys. Mueller has an interest in creating the illusion of objectivity around his investigation.”

Trump pointedly questioned why he wasn't told Paul Manafort was under investigation at the time he was hired.

"Paul Manafort worked for Ronald Reagan, Bob Dole and many other highly prominent and respected political leaders," tweeted Trump. "He worked for me for a very short time. Why didn’t government tell me that he was under investigation. These old charges have nothing to do with Collusion - a Hoax!"

Manafort faces numerous charges stemming his work for Ukraine. The charges originated out of the Mueller probe.
