Scotch Plains Public Library to Screen The Librarians Film

On Thursday, April 23, at 6:30pm, the Scotch Plains Public Library, with Indie Lens Pop-Up and Independent Lens, will host a special screening of The Librarians, which follows a courageous network of besieged librarians as they unite to examine how book restriction policies are shaping library collections. The film will be followed by a panel discussion with New Jersey public and school librarians.

From Oscar-nominated Director and Producer Kim A. Snyder and Executive Producer Sarah Jessica Parker, The Librarians takes viewers from Texas to Florida and beyond, where local libraries have become unexpected battlegrounds in a national struggle over parental control, intellectual freedom, and democracy itself.

May Hypertension Clinic at the Scotch Plains Public Library

On Friday, May 1,&nbsp; 2026&nbsp; a public health nurse from the Union County Office of Health Management will be in the Adult Room of the Scotch Plains Public Library to take blood pressure readings. The nurse will be available between 10:00am-12:00pm, and no appointment is necessary.

Registration is not required to have your blood pressure checked, so feel free to drop in and visit the public health nurse on May 1st.&nbsp;

Sports business writer Eric Fisher will discuss the upcoming soccer tournament, its history, its role in the broader culture, and how fans can keep up with the action.

The Fields Poetry Reading Series will host poets James Hoch and Jen DeGregorio in the Auditorium-Theater of the historic duCret Center of Art. The event will be from 7 - 9 pm and will include an open mic. Wine and light snacks will be offered between the featured reading and open mic. Admission is free, though donations are graciously accepted. The featured poets' books will be available for purchase and signing during the event.
The Fields Poetry Reading Series is a quarterly poetry series founded and managed by New Jersey Council of the Arts 2023 Poetry Fellows, Robin Rosen Chang and Moriah Cohen. This program is made in part by a 2026 HEART (History, Education, Arts Reaching Thousands) Grant from the Union County Board of County Commissioners.

The New Bojaira Flamenco/Jazz Band performs at the Latin Jazz @ Galeria music concert series in Westfield, NJ on Friday, April 24, 2026 at 7:30pm as part of a tour by this talented group from Spain and beyond. This special concert experience will bring to you an exciting fusion of American jazz and deeply rooted flamenco music &amp; dance.
New Bojaira (Bō-hī-ra) plays an original and engaging fusion, blending jazz improvisation with the excitement of flamenco rhythms, dance and singing to create a powerful combination of energy and subtlety on stage, taking audiences on a fascinating multi-cultural excursion. 
This creative group bridges the musical traditions from both sides of the Atlantic, delivering a sound that speaks to both Jazz and Flamenco fans. Pianist Jesús Hernández, singer/flautist Alfonso Cid, saxophonist &amp; flautist Peter Branin, double bassist Tim Ferguson, and drummer Mark Holen are joined by acclaimed Spanish flamenco dancer Elisabet Torras to generate the band’s uncommon energy with flamenco rhythms and the harmonic depth of jazz. New Bojaira's music transcends both styles, creating a new and wonderful synthesis.
With many well received concert performances in the United States, Spain, France, Italy and Portugal, this special ensemble of music artists takes the stage at the cozy GALERIA The Art Venue, located at 111 Quimby Street in downtown Westfield, NJ. 
Refreshments will be available for your enjoyment. Also, enjoy the current art exhibitions at GALERIA of works by international and talented local fine artists.

THIS WEEK! Flamenco & Jazz concert with the acclaimed NEW BOJAIRA BAND from Spain!

Dragonfly Multicultural Arts Center proudly announces its fifth annual production of short plays. The 2026 New Jersey One-Act Play Festival features five world premiere one-act plays by New Jersey playwrights, continuing Dragonfly’s mission of championing local artists, producing new work, and bringing diverse, community-centered storytelling to the stage.
Performances will take place Friday, April 24 and Saturday, April 25 at 8:00 p.m., and Sunday, April 26 at 2:00 p.m. at duCret Center of Art in Plainfield, NJ.
Following the Friday evening performance, audiences are invited to stay for a special talkback with the playwrights, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process and the opportunity to engage directly with the writers behind these world premieres.
This year’s festival features:
<ul><li>Unlove Me by Charles Grayson, directed by Andrew Rodriguez: A couple terribly in love visits a relationship counselor and tries to explain why they need help.</li><li>Reunion by Stephen Patrick, directed by Matt Holbert: An elderly woman in a nursing home is depressed until she is given a possibly magical laptop.</li><li>A Grave Mistake by Susan Cain McQuilkin, directed by Aidan O'Rourke: A man arrives in a wooded area with a body in a tarp. As he digs a grave, the tarp begins to move.</li><li>Elizabeth, NJ by Benjamin V. Marshall, directed by Kat Perez and Aaliyah Whitfield: Two immigrant women waiting to see loved ones at a detention center are harassed by the security guard and annoyed by the ever-gabbing television.</li><li>Game Company written and directed by Catherine LaMoreaux: A Baby Boomer and a Gen Z gamer are forced to work together at a video game company.</li></ul>

Fairview Cemetery & Arboretum

Fairview Cemetery and Arboretum will host a spring arboretum walking tour on April 26&nbsp;at 2 pm, highlighting some of the numerous catalogued species of trees which reside within the Cemetery grounds. The walking tour will be led by Dr. Tom Ombrello, Professor of Biology at Union College, and will provide commentary on specific trees and various historical details. Fairview Cemetery is a member of the American Public Gardens Association (APGA) and is accredited as a level 2 arboretum. 
Those interested are asked to register online at friendsoffairview1.org. Participants should enter through the rear gates on Gallows Hill Road15 minutes prior to the start of the event. Space is limited and registration is on a first come first serve basis. Fairview Cemetery is located at 1100 East Broad Street, Westfield and is open from dawn until dusk.
