Remember the slow summer days of long ago…evening walks surrounded by a choir of crickets while fireflies emerged through the twilight stillness? There’s something magical and nostalgic about these little light bearers. But unfortunately, due to loss of habitat and increased light pollution, firefly populations are disappearing all over the world. That’s why the sanctuary is honored to be a certified firefly habitat.
Join us at the sanctuary as we experience a beautiful evening under the stars enjoying the peace, LIGHT and tranquility of our nighttime friends while we learn how to protect them. Every July, a world arises from the sanctuary’s twilight, bringing forth some of the smallest insects often hidden from sight during the day. Together, we’ll watch the woodlands come alive with hundreds of twinkling firefly lights…a rare and truly magical experience you’ll never forget.
Led by renowned entomologist, Dr. Rayda Krell, and Dr. Wagener, Professor of Biology at WESTCONN, we’ll use a few entomological “tricks” to get a closer look at just how many of these creatures are out at night. By the end of the evening, you will have seen over 30 insect species and thousands of individual insects. A midsummer night’s dream in the making!
AND you won’t want to miss the sanctuary’s Discover Den for “ALL THAT GLOWS”!

Join us for a Sanctuary Soulful Saturday with our deeply grounding Qigong session! Rooted in ancient Chinese healing traditions, Qigong is a mindful self-care practice that weaves together slow, flowing movements, relaxed breathing, meditation, and soothing self-massage to awaken and balance the body’s natural energy.
In this beginner-friendly class, you’ll learn the foundations of a simple, sustainable Qigong practice designed to nourish both body and spirit. Together, we’ll explore gentle movement, self-acupressure, lymphatic massage to support immune health, guided meditation, and sound healing for deep vibrational relaxation and restoration.
Practices are accessible to all adult ages with options to participate standing or seated in a chair. You’ll leave with empowering tools you can use anytime to reduce stress, lift your mood, improve balance, support restful sleep, and cultivate a deeper sense of well-being.

Have you heard the buzz? Back by popular demand, Backyard Beekeeping classes are returning to the sanctuary! There’s never been a better time to learn the time-honored tradition of keeping and caring for bees and we’ve got the expert to show you how. Ryan Griffeth of Necker’s Farm will guide participants through spring, summer and fall beekeeping with the last class instruction focusing on winterizing your colonies. Explore what’s happening in the hive, how to provide optimum care for the bees, and how to extract your own honey. Each class is tailored to what is happening real time with the sanctuary hives and our 1 million bees, ensuring topics stay relevant to the many variables within each season.&nbsp;
Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned apiarist, classes are tailor made for you! Plus, each student can text the instructor outside of class for guidance or questions. Sign up for individual classes or enjoy all eight for a fully immersive education into beekeeping!&nbsp;
It’s hot and we are in DEARTH! This is the most important month for beekeepers. We often get lazy in the summer days and feel the bees are on autopilot. This is furthest from the truth. The nectar flow has stopped, often throwing colonies into a regression of strength. This is time to act depending on what we see. Feeding during dearth, mite treatments, hive beetle treatments and ventilation will be primary focuses. Suitable for all levels, this immersive experience invites you to slow down and soften, held in a space where the sanctuary itself supports rest and renewal.
We are honored to welcome Master Sound Practitioner Terry Eldh, whose work blends ethereal sound and voice to create a truly transportive journey. Through the otherworldly tones of alchemy crystal singing bowls, a magical crystal harp, and Terry’s remarkable three-octave angelic soprano voice, you’ll be gently guided into the depths of your inner world and toward the light of your higher self.
Emerge from this experience feeling refreshed and profoundly at ease, carrying a sense of calm and clarity long after the final note fades.
What to Bring
Please bring an extra thick yoga mat (or two yoga mats), pillow and blanket. Wear comfortable clothing and eye mask (optional).

Families will enjoy live insect encounters with ambassador insects from Riverside Reptiles, create imaginative bug-inspired nature crafts, and dive into the hidden world beneath the pond’s surface in our Sanctuary Discovery Den: The Secret Lives of Pond Bugs.
Meet aquatic insects that row through water, breathe through snorkels, and carry air bubbles like tiny scuba tanks. Guests will dip for real specimens, explore authentic pond muck, and use digital microscopes to get face-to-face with these remarkably adapted neighbors living just below the surface.

Step away from screens and into the great outdoors for an old-fashioned Family Camp! Experience a joyful afternoon of classic camp fun, hands-on discovery, and nature exploration designed for all ages.
During our 5 Senses Adventure, families will take a guided walk through the sanctuary using sight, sound, touch, smell, and even a little imagination to discover the hidden wonders of local plants and wildlife. Whether you’re three or ninety-three, there’s always something new to notice in nature.
At our collaborative craft station, Build It Forward, families will work side-by-side to create real wildlife habitat projects like bluebird boxes and bee hotels – important creations that can help support animals right in your own backyard.
Then head over to The Backyard Lab, where curiosity takes center stage through hands-on science experiments exploring the chemistry and physics hidden within everyday materials. Designed to spark wonder and playful learning, these activities encourage families to ask questions and test ideas together.

Come sip, stretch &amp; unwine in the vineyard at Aquila's Nest Winery with YogaSpace instructor Barb Moore.&nbsp; Join us for a one-hour mixed level yoga class in the vineyard and then stay a while and enjoy a glass of your favorite Aquila's Nest wine and snacks for purchase. Please bring your mat or a towel and any yoga props you would like to use during this mixed level practice. Also, please dress appropriately for yoga outside.&nbsp;Wine is not included in the ticket. A drink purchase of minimum $10 plus tax and gratuity per participant is required to attend this event and can be made at the vineyard prior to the start of the event, after our staff checks your ID.
