There’s never been a better time to learn the time-honored tradition of keeping and caring for bees and we’ve got the expert to show you how. Ryan Griffeth of Necker’s Farm will guide participants through spring, summer and fall beekeeping with the last class instruction focusing on winterizing your colonies. Explore what’s happening in the hive, how to provide optimum care for the bees, and how to extract your own honey. Each class is tailored to what is happening real time with the sanctuary hives and our 1 million bees, ensuring topics stay relevant to the many variables within each season.&nbsp;

As the temps warm, our colonies will grow fast. We are now in the beginning of swarm season! This is the most exciting time for seasoned beekeepers, but also the scariest time for new bees. Learn all about swarm prevention and how to prepare splitting colonies. Join us for a Sanctuary Soulful Saturday with a deeply grounding Qigong experience! Rooted in ancient Chinese healing traditions, Qigong is a mindful self-care practice that weaves together slow, flowing movements, relaxed breathing, meditation, and soothing self-massage to awaken and balance the body’s natural energy.
In this beginner-friendly class, you’ll learn the foundations of a simple, sustainable Qigong practice designed to nourish both body and spirit. Together, we’ll explore gentle movement, self-acupressure, lymphatic massage to support immune health, guided meditation, and sound healing for deep vibrational relaxation and restoration.

Class Three – May 9: Nectar flow and parasites
We are now seeing the start of the nectar flow at peak swarm season. This class can get off track quickly depending on what we see and the react spectrum. We currently have 17 active colonies at the sanctuary so this will likely mimic several situations other bees are currently going through. We will also be administering our first varroa mite treatment. This class will have a lot of information on bee parasites and how to treat them. In addition, we may also be adding our first honey supers. Experience the sanctuary as day gently gives way to night during our Golden Hour Hike, a peaceful May evening walk timed with the soft glow of sunset and early twilight.
As the light fades, the landscape comes alive in subtle ways. We’ll slow our pace and tune our senses, listening for birds as they sing their final songs of the day, noticing the opening chorus of frogs and practicing birding by ear in the dimming light. Along the way, we’ll keep watch for moths, mammals, and other nocturnal creatures beginning to stir.
This guided hike invites curiosity and is the perfect opportunity to embrace stillness, sharpen your awareness, and discover the often-overlooked wonders that emerge during this quiet, in-between time of day. Class Four – May 30: Maintaining a healthy colony
We are still in peak swarm season, but now at peak nectar flow. This class will be more focused on maintaining a healthy colony through the nectar flow to get the largest crop possible. We will be focused on keeping the colonies in the hives and working at optimal performance. There will also be tastings of fresh honeycomb and pollen. On Saturday, May 2 the United Methodist Church of Monroe will be hosting our Paper Shredding Fundraiser AND introducing Electronics Recycling. Now take advantage of a one-stop source for confidential, convenient document and data destruction with Affordable Solutions, LLC.
Stop by between 9:00 am – 12:00 pm at 435 Main Street, Monroe (corner of Route 25 and Route 59). We’ll be there rain or shine! Paper Shredding: STILL ONLY $10 for a standard archive box (15”x12”x10”); price increases $5 according to container size.
Electronics Recycling: Cell phones, hard drives and tablets: $10/per Computers and laptops: $20/per
Payment: cash, check (made out to: UMC Monroe with “Paper Shredding” in the memo line) or credit/debit
