Who was the calligrapher that wrote the Declaration of Independence? How did they write during the American Revolution? What tools did they use? What lettering style? Explore these questions and more in this hands-on workshop with calligrapher Debby Reelitz. Learn to write in script, use a dip nib and ink, and scribe a line from the Declaration of Independence. This workshop will be structured for the beginner, but all levels of experience are encouraged to join! Suitable for ages 16 and up. This program is generously supported by the Auerbach Schiro Foundation. About the Artist: Debby Reelitz is a professional calligrapher in North Granby, Connecticut. Introduced to calligraphy by her 5th grade teacher, she dabbled for years until opening her own calligraphy studio in Chicago before moving to northern Connecticut. Connecticut's Old State House

Genealogist and historian John Mills will host the official book launch event for his debut work, The Narrative of Primus: A Lineage Woven into America’s History set to be released on April 21. The Narrative of Primus reconstructs the life of an enslaved African boy brought to colonial Connecticut and traces the generations of his descendants who fought in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and beyond. Through meticulous genealogical research and analysis of primary sources, Mills brings forward a story that has largely remained untold. The book can be purchased prior to the event here.
The choice of venue underscores the significance of the work. The Connecticut Old State House, one of the oldest state houses in the nation, serves as a powerful setting to reflect on the early ideals of American democracy and the individuals whose experiences were not fully represented within them.
The April 29 event will include a brief author talk, a reading, and an opportunity for attendees to engage directly with Mills and purchase signed copies of the book.

About the Author:
John Mills is a dedicated genealogist and president of the Alex Breanne Corporation, a Connecticut-based non-profit focused on research into the formerly enslaved. John is known for his meticulous research and deep passion for uncovering family histories. With years of experience, he has helped many individuals uncover ancestral connections. His commitment to accuracy and detail has earned him a reputation as a trusted expert in genealogical circles. His notable contributions to the field have garnered recognition, including an exposé in The Washington Post, an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, and multiple interviews with famed Civil Rights attorney Areva Martin.

Through his own words from his published memoir, and the lived accounts of his descendants, come explore and elevate the narrative of a man who defined the struggle for true liberty. Born in 1790, James Mars lived the paradox of American freedom – sold as a slave in a state that claimed to be “The Land of Steady Habits.”
Keynote address by James Mars Descendent Rev. Dr. Shelley D. Best, founder of Creative Disruptor® and the author of Creative Disruption: How Artists and Innovators Build Influence, Drive Change, and Shape the Future. A Yale Divinity School–trained minister, visual artist, and social innovator, she is known for her groundbreaking work at the intersection of narrative, creativity, and leadership.

Over 400 middle and high school Connecticut students representing an estimated 69 schools are competing on May 2 for the chance to represent their State at the National History Day Contest, being held in June at the University of Maryland. The State Contest is a culmination of months of hard work by students as they conducted historical research, analyzed their sources and created projects. Students participating in the State Contest include the winners from five regional contests held earlier this spring.
Students participate in a variety of ways: in classroom instruction, after-school clubs, as part of an enrichment program, or as an independent project. Students have spent months working on projects of their own choosing related to this year’s theme of Revolution, Reaction, and Reform in History. Students can explore any type of history, from local to international. Working alone or ingroups, students present projects in one of five categories – exhibits, documentaries, websites, papers, or performances.
The top two prize winners in each category will earn coveted spots to the National History Day competition, which will be held in Maryland in June. Third place finishers serve as alternates to the National Contest. Additionally, twenty Special Prizes related to specific topic content such as World History, Connecticut History, Social Justice, Jewish History, American Legal History and American Colonial History, will be awarded. 12:15 – 1:00pm: Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry Explore and experience a variety of shadow puppetry styles including hand, paper and objects.

Using items from the Connecticut Museum’s collection, Professors Kete and Petrino will introduce you to Sigourney’s central role as an American poet, educator, and rights activist, and to the Lydia Sigourney Digital Archive Project. About the speakers: Mary Louise Kete is Chair of the English Department at the University of Vermont where she also teaches and studies 19th-century American literature and culture. Her publications focus on the contributions of American women to the major cultural movements of the long 19th-century. Elizabeth Petrino is Director of Liberal Studies in the Associate Degree Program at Fairfield Bellarmine and Professor of English at Fairfield University, Fairfield, CT. She and Mary Louise Kete have co-edited Lydia Sigourney: Critical Essays and Cultural Views (U of Massachusetts Press, 2018). Her articles on Sigourney explore a range of topics including gift book culture, correspondence, deaf education, and the environment and have appeared in Studies in American Humor, Legacy, ESQ, and ISLE. Lunch and Learn – Lydia Sigourney: Unsung Mother of American Literature

A special presentation in partnership with Smithsonian Affiliations and Jorge Zamanillo, founding director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Latino.
Jorge Zamanillo will share the vision, process, and next steps in developing the Smithsonian’s newest museum, which honors the dreams, challenges, and triumphs of U.S. Latinos, and elevates Latino stories within the nation’s narrative. He will discuss the journey from congressional authorization to planning and design, and the collaborative process shaping a museum that reflects the diversity, creativity, and resilience of Latinos nationwide.
The presentation will also highlight how the museum is building meaningful partnerships across the country to ensure that Latino stories are not only represented in Washington, D.C. but are rooted in communities nationwide. Discover how institutions like the Connecticut Museum, and neighborhoods such as Hartford’s North End, can play a vital role in shaping and participating in this national effort.
This program offers an opportunity to learn how a national museum is being built with community at its heart and how Connecticut’s Latino communities can help inform and inspire its future.

About the Speaker: Jorge Zamanillo is the founding director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Latino, which Congress established in December 2020. Zamanillo provides leadership and strategic direction for the museum and guides the museum’s comprehensive plan to preserve, document, display/interpret and promote knowledge of U.S. Latino history, art and culture. Zamanillo and his team are also integrating and building on programs previously managed by the Smithsonian Latino Center and working on new museum collaborations, digital resources, exhibitions and fundraising.
Previously, Zamanillo was the executive director and CEO of HistoryMiami Museum. Before joining HistoryMiami Museum, Zamanillo was an archaeologist at the non-profit cultural resource management firm Archaeological and Historical Conservancy Inc. in Miami.&nbsp;Born in New York City, Zamanillo grew up in Miami and earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology at Florida State University in Tallahassee and his master’s in museum studies at the University of Leicester in Leicester, England.
The&nbsp;Making History, Making Change&nbsp;Lecture Series is a national collaboration between the Smithsonian and 25 Smithsonian Affiliate organizations, featuring expert-led talks that explore the people, moments, and ideals that have shaped—and continue to shape—the American experience.

The Connecticut Democracy Center (CTDC) is pleased to announce the recipients of their third annual Connecticut Democracy Center Awards. This year the 2026 CTDC Community Leader Award will be presented to Patricia Russo, Executive Director, The Campaign School at Yale University. Eversource Energy has been selected to receive the CTDC Business Leader Award in recognition of the work of their Pro-Equity Advisory Team. JoAnn H. Price, Co-Founder of Fairview Capital Partners, Inc. will be honored with the Mary C. Gawlicki Philanthropic Leader Award.
The awards program was established to recognize those committed to strengthening democracy through acts of citizenship, service, and community engagement. The 2026 Connecticut Democracy Center Awards will pay tribute to these leaders at Connecticut’s Old State House on Thursday, March 12, 2026. CTDC COMMUNITY LEADER AWARD: Patricia Russo, Executive Director, The Campaign School at Yale University For over thirty-five years, Patricia has held leadership positions centered on women’s equity. As Executive Director of The Campaign School at Yale University, Patricia oversees the nonpartisan, issue-neutral leadership program whose mission is to increase the number and influence of women in elected and appointed office in the United States and around the globe. She has worked on federal, state, and local political campaigns for both Democratic and Republican candidates and served more than two decades on Connecticut’s Permanent Commission on the Status of Women, eight of them as Chair. Patricia is part of the national leadership team of Political Parity, a bipartisan initiative dedicated to increasing the number of women in elected office and is a member of the Advisory Board for Republican Women for Progress.
CTDC BUSINESS LEADER AWARD: Eversource Energy, in recognition of the work of their Pro-Equity Advisory Team
The Eversource Energy Pro-Equity Advisory Team (PEAT) was established in 2021 under the leadership of Theresa Hopkins-Staten, President of Eversource Energy Foundation and Vice President, Community Partnership and Engagement. PEAT’s mission is to incorporate equity into all company decision-making policies and practices, and to drive fair and equitable outcomes for their communities and customers, particularly those that have been historically underserved, under-resourced, and environmentally overburdened. Under the guidance of the PEAT, Eversource now offers Equity Fundamentals Training to educate and provide employees the tools and resources they need to improve communication between customers, community partners, and in designing accessible programs to better meet the needs of the communities in which they serve.
MARY C. GAWLICKI PHILANTHROPIC LEADER AWARD: JoAnn H. Price, Co-Founder of Fairview Capital Partners, Inc. JoAnn H. Price is Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Fairview Capital Partners, Inc., which curates dynamic relationships for institutional investors, providing unparalleled access across the most compelling segments of the private markets. She is a member of Fairview’s investment committee and manager of all Fairview-sponsored funds. She currently serves on the Howard University School of Business Board of Visitors, the YMCA of Greater Hartford Board of Trustees, the Wilson-Gray YMCA Board of Advisors, and on the Amistad Center for Art &amp; Culture Board of Trustees. She also serves on the boards of the Apollo Theater Foundation in New York City, Trinity Health of New England, and 4-CT. JoAnn also recently completed her term as Chairperson of the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving recently renamed the Greater Hartford Gives Foundation.
The Mary C. Gawlicki Philanthropic Leader Award was established in 2023 to celebrate the service of Mary Gawlicki, who served on the Connecticut Democracy Center Board of Directors from 2018 to 2023. As co-founders of Corporate Translations Inc. Abraham Lincoln traveled to New England only twice. In 1848, he was an unknown “Sucker Whig” from the western frontier. In 1860, he was a political celebrity from the Lincoln-Douglas Debates.
This virtual presentation by David J. Kent takes you along for the ride as we discover how Lincoln became the man we came to know, and how Connecticut helped Lincoln become president. David’s most recent book, Lincoln in New England: In Search of His Forgotten Tours, was published in March 2026.

About the speaker: David J. Kent is an Abraham Lincoln historian, former scientist, avid world traveler, and multi-book author, the most recent being Lincoln in New England: In Search of His Forgotten Tours. David is the Immediate Past President of the Lincoln Group of the District of Columbia, on the Executive Committee and Board of Directors of the Abraham Lincoln Institute, and a member of the Board of Advisors of the Lincoln Forum. He is a frequent speaker on Abraham Lincoln topics and served as Master of Ceremonies for the Lincoln Memorial Centennial program in 2022. David has won numerous awards both for his scientific work and as an Abraham Lincoln historian. Lunch and Learn – A Sucker Whig in Connecticut’s Court: Abraham Lincoln Comes to New England

Join us for an immersive dance workshop exploring the elegance and enduring style of Chinese classical dance, taught by choreographer Kaili Chen, founder and director of Li Garden Dance Company and a current SNEAP (Southern New England Apprenticeship Program) Mentor.
In this workshop, learn fundamental elements of Chinese classical dance, including expressive hand gestures, focused eye work and facial expression, refined walking patterns, and short movement combinations that highlight rhythm and flow. The session also introduces the historical background and distinctive aesthetics of Liyuan Dance, a classical form rooted in Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE) court traditions.
Participants will also explore creativity through traditional face painting, designing their own classical-inspired makeup details such as the mei xin (forehead ornament) and dimples. The workshop includes hands-on experience wearing Han-style costumes and using flowing silk scarves (pibo) to embody grace and everyday etiquette.
Blending movement, history, fashion, and self-expression, this workshop invites participants to experience Chinese classical dance as both an art form and a way of life.
Workshop choreography is geared towards female participants ages 8 and up. Please wear a fitted top and pants. Light-colored socks required.

About the Artist: Kaili Chen is the founder and director of Li Garden Dance Company, a nonprofit organization established in 2017 in Stamford, Connecticut. Dedicated to preserving and sharing traditional Chinese culture.
Originally from Taiwan, she was a principal dancer and rehearsal director with the renowned Han-Tang Yuefu Music and Dance Ensemble in Taipei for over 30 years and trained extensively in Liyuan Classical Dance, a court dance tradition originating in the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE), and studied martial arts at the Shaolin Temple. Her work has been presented at major international venues including Lincoln Center Theater, The Joyce Theater, Théâtre de la Ville and Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris, and the Palace Museum in Beijing, as well as festivals such as Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival.
