Join Sustainable Southbury for a FREE screening of The Plastic Detox, an eye-opening new documentary film that explains what microplastics and their chemicals are doing to our health. Chemicals found in plastics have been associated with cancer, nervous system damage, hormone disruption, obesity, and fertility issues.
This documentary follows the research of Dr. Swan and other experts in the field, covering the impact on human development. The film features six couples with unexplained infertility who embark on a bold plastic detox of their homes; it changes their lives, health, and families forever.
The film will be followed by a discussion on how to reduce your plastic exposure and take matters into our own hands.

Sustainable Southbury is partnering with local farmers to accept donations of used pumpkins. They make great animal feed. Visit a participating Southbury farm anytime from dawn to dusk, from October 31st through December 6th, to drop off your pumpkins for animal feed at the farm.
Please note: paint, glitter, decorations, candles, and wax are not suitable for animal feed and are not eligible for drop-off. It is vitally important that the pumpkins contain no metal, as this could be lethal to cattle. No bleached pumpkins, hairspray, Vaseline, vinegar, bleach, or ANY substance used to prevent wildlife from eating your pumpkins. If you cannot eat it, neither can the animal. Do not drop off any other food scraps or organic materials at these participating farms.
The participating Southbury farms are:
●Aradia Farm, 1008 Bullet Hill Rd
●Lone Oak Farm, 227 Bates Rock Rd
●Breezy Knolls Farm, 507 Jeremy Swamp Road
●Manville Farm, 580 E. Flat Hill Road
Look for a designated collection spot, bins, or a wagon as you pull into the farm.
Why should you not throw your pumpkins in the trash?
●1.3 billion pounds of pumpkins are sent to landfills and incinerators annually in the U.S.
●By diverting this wet, heavy organic matter, we lower the cost of hauling trash away and reduce the air pollution caused by incinerators that burn our trash.
●Leaving food scraps and pumpkins in landfills creates methane gas, contributing to greenhouse gases.
●Donating your used pumpkins will help support local farmers.
This program and partnership with local farmers is part of Sustainable Southbury’s Food Waste Reduction Program. We offer education to residents to help them reduce their food waste and, together with the town, have developed a Food Scrap Drop-off program for composting food scraps at the Town's Transfer Station. We partner with the Center for EcoTechnology to help local restaurants reduce food waste and recycle what they cannot donate.

The Lions Club is partnering with Sustainable Southbury for a community bottle and can collection fundraiser on Sunday, November 1st, from 12:00–2:00 p.m. at the rear of the building at 800 Main Street South, Southbury.
The Southbury Community Lions Club has served Southbury for over a decade. The Lions Clubs globally focus on Vision, Hunger, Environment, Disaster Relief, and Childhood Cancer. Most recently, members rallied to provide critical disaster relief following the devastating August 2024 floods, repairing homes and distributing supplies. They also champion youth vision health by implementing the KidSight screening program across all Region 15 elementary schools. The organization collects thousands of donated eyeglasses and helps produce specialized books for visually impaired individuals. They provide dedicated financial and hands-on assistance to families navigating the hardships of childhood cancer. The Southbury Lions Club also directly combats local food insecurity by stocking the Southbury Food Bank and area Little Pantries. Their environmental stewardship has successfully diverted over three tons of plastic bags from local landfills. Through a dynamic partnership with Sustainable Southbury, the club continues to foster long-term community sustainability and improvement.
Please note: EyeRecycle requires aluminum cans to be bagged separately from plastic bottles. Plastic bottles must be pre-sorted by size: under 1 liter, 1 liter, and 2 liters. Glass bottles should be packed in cardboard boxes to help prevent breakage. Participants using EyeRecycle bags with pre-sorted recyclables may use the express lane for quick drop-off and payment. Empty inkjet printer cartridges (not laser cartridges) will also be accepted.
If you do not have an EyeRecycle bag, volunteers will assist in transferring recyclables into approved bags for counting. Bags cost 50 cents each and may be purchased at the event, through EyeRecycle, or at Sustainable Southbury events. Please note there is a five-bag limit for this event.
For additional information about accepted items, sorting requirements, and express lane guidelines, visit Sustainable Southbury EyeRecycle Event Information or email info@sustainablesouthbury.org.

Trumbull Library: Main Branch

Meet Connecticut author Ethan Rutherford for an afternoon of conversation about writing, publishing, and his acclaimed novel, North Sun, a 2025 National Book Award Finalist and one of Barack Obama’s favorite books of 2025.
Set in 1878, North Sun follows a whaling ship’s crew from New Bedford toward the remote arctic waters. This strange, haunting adventure explores obsession, survival, and the human cost of pursuing a dangerous ambition.
John Mulaney called it “[a] must must must read” and “funny, bizarre, reckless, and very moving.”
Hear how Rutherford brought this unusual story to life, learn about his career as a working writer, and bring your questions for the audience Q&A.
A reception and book signing will follow, with books available for purchase from Black Rock Books. Sponsored by the Friends of the Trumbull Library.
Registration is encouraged.
