Barefoot Chamber Concerts ("an enterprise noted for both its quality and informality" - San Francisco Classical Voice) presents really good music in the right acoustic and without the formality of most classical music events. The Barefoot All-Stars (Erik Andersen, Wendy Gillespie, Peter Hallifax, Julie Jeffrey, and Lynn Tetenbaum, viols) and lutenist superstar John Lenti present a program honoring John Dowland on the 400th anniversary of his death. In 1605, Dowland, the greatest lutenist of his time, published perhaps his most famous chamber music: "Lachrimae, or Seaven Teares." It is a set of seven "passionate pavans" for a lute and five viols. The opening pavan is an instrumental rendition of Dowland's most famous lute song "Flow, my Tears." Played in sequence, each pavan magically recasts the material of the original in endlessly inventive ways, and the cycle as a whole can be experienced as an evolving exploration of melancholy's many facets - a unique compositional feat.Melancholy was a main theme of the Elizabethan poets and musicians, and Dowland was one of its high priests. So many of his solo lute pieces and lute songs reflect this, and we have chosen to stay with the mood for the whole concert: as well as the Lachrimae cycle, we will feature the famous "Forlorn Hope" fantasy for solo lute, and "Semper Dowland semper dolens," perhaps his most extreme statement of melancholy for a consort of viols, as well as works by contemporaneous composers inspired by Lachrimae and the spirit of the age.All of this will be in the newly refurbished Magdalen Hall (parish hall) of Saint Mary Magdalen, Berkeley, the perfect acoustical setting for this, the consummate work of the great John Dowland.$25.Presented by Barefoot Chamber Concerts

Descend down to La Val’s Subterranean Theater and delve into a vivid story woven from several lesser-known European fairy tales that reflect the dark and dangerous undercurrents of childhood and all of its enchantment. In Mary Zimmerman’s The Secret in the Wings, a child is left with a frightening ogre, a basement becomes an enchanted kingdom, and one strange story gives way to the next in a kaleidoscopic unfolding of fairy tale as nightmare, memory, and theatrical spell. Embracing Lunatico’s physical, ensemble-driven style, director Michael Barr, creates a grimy, beautiful, and unsettling dreamscape that emerges from the shadowy corners of La Val’s Subterranean Theater. This Halloween season, join Lunatico in the basement for a night of fairy-tale lunacy…if you dare. Playing October 10th-November 1st. Come in costume on the Halloween night performance!

Viva La Vida with Excerpts from P1N0CCH10 & Carmilla features new works and a returning Oceánica Ballet autumn tradition.
Act 1 premieres selections from two upcoming story ballets. P1N0CCH10, a retelling of Carlo Collodi's classic tale of Pinocchio, explores humanity, artificial intelligence, and our relationship with the natural world. Carmilla, an adaptation of Sheridan Le Fanu's groundbreaking sapphic vampire novella, stages a mysterious masquerade ball.
Act II features the return of Viva La Vida, the original story of Lucio and Lupita in a joyful folklórico-infused tale about transcending loss and the resilience of love, inspired by Día de los Muertos. In this “celebration of life, loved ones and culture,” writes Jocelyn Tong of the Daily Californian, “mythic creatures from the land of the dead … [lead to] twirled scarves and snapped-open fans …in a story of homecoming.” Throughout all three stories, the wisdom of women across time and cultures is amplified.
