Award-winning County Agent, Steven Yergeau, PhD. at the Rutgers Cooperative Extension, who studies environmental issues, has conducted 16 years of research focusing on water conservation, pollution prevention, and achieving a sustainable landscape. In July, he will receive the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of County Agricultural Agents for his years of volunteer service. Currently, his research focuses on water-related issues, including debris removal from oceans and waterways and the preservation of shores. His studies include rain-barrel mosquito presence and stormwater projects in Ocean, Atlantic, and Monmouth Counties. Dr. Yergeau is enthusiastic about Earth Day, which involves ecology and land preservation, and is celebrated annually every spring on April 22. Soil compaction is among the other topics he discusses at libraries, community clubs, and governmental agencies. Beyond gardeners, the general public may be unaware of the importance of soil compaction and growing degree days. For the proper growth and vitality of plants, these considerations will determine the outcome of your plantings.
