Celebrate the opening of the Blanton’s newest exhibition with a vibrant, after-hours event inspired by American Modernism. Enjoy an evening of live music, art-making, and after-hours access to the galleries.
Highlights include live performances by Austin artists Dossey (7:30–8:30 pm), featured by NPR and SXSW’s 100 Artists to See, and Jane Leo (9:30–10:30 pm), an art rock and synth pop duo. At 8:30 pm, join Austin-based artist Christopher Miñán Fitzgerald for a gallery talk on Indian Canoe (c. 1886) by Albert Bierstadt.
Throughout the evening, participate in creative activities across the museum, including hands-on art-making inspired by Alma Thomas, interactive Rainbow Tours (7:30 pm, 9:00 pm, and 9:45 pm), and activities with Almost Real Things (ART) (7–10:30 pm), featuring clay tile making with Natalie Earhart and jewelry design with London Brantley. Additional offerings include a photo booth, temporary tattoos, and late-night shopping in the Museum Store (7–10 pm).

Through a selection of images and documents from the Briscoe Center’s archives, this talk will explore the path to suffrage in Texas, and its influence on the national passage of the 19th amendment. Highlights include the work of Minnie Fisher Cunningham, the WCTU, and Anna Pennybacker, showing aspects of the complex progress of suffrage on the state and national level.

About the Speaker: Sarah Sonner, Ph.D. is Director for Curation at the Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin. She joined the Briscoe Center in 2016 and oversees the center’s exhibit program and material culture collections. Previously, Dr. Sonner served as Curator for the National Endowment for the Humanities’ traveling exhibits. Her experience in exhibit development includes roles in research, interpretation, and design coordination at museums such as the Brooklyn Museum and the Victoria &amp; Albert Museum, London. Steve Hernandez is a stand-up comedian and the queer, Mexican-American, polyamorous, fallen-youth-pastor-turned-bartender of your dreams. He’s the founder of Chatterbox Comedy Night, one of the longest-running and hottest weekly stand-up shows in the country, which has been featured in the LA Times and PASTE Magazine. He has featured for comedians like Gabriel Iglesias, Chris Estrada, Caleb Hearon, and Morgan Jay. He has performed at comedy festivals such as the Netflix is a Joke Festival and Riot LA, and appeared in numerous feature films as well as on Sarah Silverman’s I Love You America and Comedy Central’s Corporate. When not onstage, his voice can be found on numerous hit podcasts including Who’s Your God?, The Male Gaze, Reality Bytes, and Views From the Vista.
