Across Cape Cod and the nation, communities are coming together to honor this history—and cider played a central role in the daily lives of early Americans. Cider was once the drink of New England—served in taverns, on farms, and even aboard ships along the coast. On windswept farms and in seaside inns, cider connected communities, fueled debates, and accompanied the toasts that shaped a young nation. In 1776, the average New Englander drank over 35 gallons of hard cider a year, and John Adams famously wrote, “I continue my practice of drinking a Jill of Cyder in the Morning and find no ill but some good Effect.”

Step aboard the Schooner Hindu and journey through nearly a century of maritime history. This 1925 gaff-rigged schooner has carried generations of Provincetown locals and visitors through the harbor, witnessing the evolution of the town from a bustling fishing and whaling hub to a modern tourist destination.
Explore the Hindu’s fascinating story: built as a pleasure craft in Maine, converted to a cargo vessel during the Depression, requisitioned by the Navy in World War II, and restored with care to sail again today. Discover the challenges and triumphs of her extensive restoration, the craftsmanship of wooden schooners, and the traditions of classic sailing that the Hindu embodies. Through historic photographs, personal stories, and behind-the-scenes insights from the restoration process, attendees will learn how this beloved vessel has become a living link to Cape Cod’s maritime past.

Cape Cod is a destination for visitors drawn to our iconic lighthouses. Many imagine the romantic life of a lighthouse keeper — watching the sea, guiding ships, and living on the edge of the coast. But in the 19th and early 20th century United States, this profession was almost entirely closed to women.

 For most, the only path to becoming a keeper came through loss — stepping into the role after the death of a father or husband. Here on Cape Cod, five remarkable women did exactly that. They took on the responsibility of tending the light, maintaining the stations, and safeguarding mariners, earning admiration and respect for their dedication, resilience, and skill.

 Sam Notick, Collections and Exhibits Manager at the Cape Cod Maritime Museum, will share the stories of these trailblazing women who kept the lights shining on Cape Cod.

Bonnie Campbell Lilienfeld - Curator at the Sandwich Glass Museum &amp; Historical Society - explores how glass, both practical and decorative, offers a revealing glimpse into daily life in colonial New England. Her talk examines the use of glass in early homes, from windowpanes to tableware, much of it imported through trade with England and beyond. She also highlights early efforts at glassmaking in the colonies, considering what these objects reveal about changing tastes, everyday routines, and expanding global connections. By the time of the American Revolution, glass had taken on added significance, reflecting the economic pressures and political tensions of the era.

History on Tap: Talking Pictures: a Discussion of WWII Photos of Camp Edwards and Cape Cod 

What can the handwritten logbooks of 19th-century whaling ships tell us about today’s changing climate? Through groundbreaking collaborative research, oceanographer Caroline Ummenhofer from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Timothy Walker are uncovering how weather observations recorded aboard New England whaling vessels more than 200 years ago are now helping scientists reconstruct long-term changes in global climate and ocean wind patterns.

 Their work draws from thousands of pages of historic whaling logbooks dating from 1790 to 1910, preserved in the collections of the New Bedford Whaling Museum, Nantucket Historical Association, and Providence Public Library. Written by sailors traveling across some of the most remote oceans on Earth, these records contain daily notes on wind direction, storms, sea conditions, precipitation, and changing weather patterns—captured decades before modern meteorological instruments and satellites existed.

 By transforming these descriptive observations into scientific climate data, researchers are gaining new insight into historical wind systems, ocean circulation, and long-term environmental change. The project demonstrates how maritime history and archival research can directly contribute to modern climate science, offering valuable context for understanding today’s rapidly changing world.
