Cape Cod Maritime Museum

The story of Noah’s Ark as offered in the Bible is simply incompatible with existing science and the archaeological record. But Larry Brown (Sunday columnist, Cape Cod Times) has always believed there is a kernel of truth to it—the memory of something catastrophic that once wiped out much of the human race. It would have been the survivors who told the story of a great flood and passed down how they were descended from those who endured it. That part, at least, is real.
The oldest surviving written story, The Epic of Gilgamesh, dating back to ancient Sumer, also contains a flood account. It includes a celestial warning to build a boat, instructions to bring animals aboard, and even the sending of a dove to see if the waters had receded. Since the ancient Hebrews preserved the biblical version, Larry looks to their historical experiences for possible inspiration behind the details of the Ark.
To explore this, Larry examines Mesopotamia—particularly the Marsh Arabs—and what captive Hebrews may have witnessed in Egyptian engineering, including massive barges capable of towing two obelisks at a time along the Nile River. Join Bob Zaremba, owner of Maps of Antiquity in Chatham, for an illustrated journey through the early nautical charts of Cape Cod and the Northeast. Housed in a historic late-1700s Chatham farmhouse, Maps of Antiquity offers over 15,000 antique maps, charts, and prints, spanning early American maps, hand-colored 19th-century state and country maps, historical prints, and more. In this talk, Bob will showcase rare and fascinating charts that guided mariners along Cape Cod and the Northeast, explore their history, and share insights from his decades of expertise in antique maps, restoration, and conservation. Navigate the history of nautical charts of Cape Cod from Samuel de Champlain to our own local chart makers George Eldridge and his son George W. Eldridge, of Chatham. Learn about the development of American chart making from after the revolution to the 20th Century. This is a must-see for anyone interested in maritime history, navigation, or the story of early American chart making!

Join us for a fun-filled day on the water at the Annual Rowing Rendezvous at Kalmus Beach! 🕙 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM 📍 Hyannis
Come celebrate traditional rowing on Cape Cod with boats on the beach, rowing demonstrations, and hands-on opportunities to try a variety of New England–style traditional small boats. Members of the Cape Cod Traditional Small Craft Association will be bringing their own boats—many of them built by the rowers themselves—and making them available for short rows.
🛶 New to rowing? No problem! Assistance will be available for beginners. You will get your feet wet, so plan accordingly.

Dolphins have long captured the human imagination as highly intelligent animals capable of complex communication. But what does science actually tell us about how dolphins communicate? Join Dr. Laela Sayigh - Senior Research Specialist, Biology, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution - as she explores the evolution of our understanding of dolphin communication, from early assumptions to today’s cutting-edge research. Drawing on her work at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, she will highlight the structure and function of dolphins’ distinctive “signature whistles,” as well as other lesser-understood vocalizations.



 This talk will also dive into the innovative tools scientists use to study dolphins, including acoustic tags, playback experiments, and sound monitoring systems that may help prevent mass stranding events. Looking ahead, Dr. Sayigh will discuss how emerging technologies—like artificial intelligence—are shaping the future of marine mammal research.
