Join local author <a href="https://www.dwcapecod.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Don Wilding</a> for a special author talk on Sunday, June 28 at 4 p.m., featuring his new release <a href="https://library.clamsnet.org/Record/629396?searchId=38361716&amp;recordIndex=1&amp;page=1&amp;referred=resultIndex" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Prohibition on Cape Cod: Running the Rum In</a>. He uncovers stories, ranging from horrifying to humorous, from this unforgettable age of contraband and controversy on Cape Cod. This event will be followed by a book signing and sale in partnership with Eight Cousins Bookstore.
Fishermen, Farmers and Gangsters on the Cape risk everything to bring in the rum. During Prohibition, rumrunning was big business on Cape Cod. Fishermen and farmers, such as Provincetown’s Manny Zora and Eastham’s Bud Cummings, headed offshore to “Rum Row” under cover of darkness, bringing the criminal yet coveted alcohol home. They risked heavy fines, jail time, and even their lives in encounters with law enforcement, hijackers, and gangsters. Sandwich’s Eugene Haines, a staunch supporter of Prohibition, mysteriously disappeared, believed to have been murdered by rumrunners.
Don Wilding is the author of six books on Cape Cod history: Historic Storms of Cape Cod, released in May 2024; Cape Cod and the Portland Gale of 1898, published in May 2023; Henry Beston’s Cape Cod: How ‘The Outermost House’ Inspired a National Seashore, A Brief History of Eastham: On the Outer Beach of Cape Cod, and Shipwrecks of Cape Cod: Stories of Triumph &amp; Tragedy. Prohibition on Cape Cod: Running The Rum In is his most recent published work.
Don has worked as a Cape tour guide and is a regular speaker on Cape Cod lore in Massachusetts and across New England. He was an award-winning newspaper editor, writer, and designer in Massachusetts for 36 years, including a recent stint as a contributing history columnist and photographer for Cape newspapers. Don has also led history walks for the Harwich Conservation Trust since 2018 and was recognized as one of their “Conservationists of the Year” in 2023.
Don has also been an instructor of Cape Cod history courses for the Open University of Wellfleet and Nauset Community Education.

Saramaria lives here in Falmouth with her family.

Bringing along a portable chair is encouraged (available outdoor seating is limited) and your favorite binoculars. Since we will be meeting inside first, you’re welcome to leave your chair on the back patio while we gather inside.

<a href="https://www.instagram.com/brandidisterheft/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Brandi Disterheft</a> is an acclaimed Canadian-American jazz bassist, vocalist and composer known for her swinging bass lines and melodic improvisations. Her music blends straight-ahead jazz with contemporary influences, often featuring her soulful vocals. Having studied with Ron Carter, she won the JUNO (Canada’s GRAMMY) for Best Traditional Jazz Album of the Year in 2008 for her album Debut. Brandi has captivated audiences at international festivals, major jazz clubs and prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. Now she comes to Falmouth, along with Alex Minasian on piano, as another great concert in our “Women Who Lead” series.

Join us on a journey through lovely local gardens at this summer’s annual West Falmouth Library Garden Tour on Friday, July 17 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Entrance fee of five dollars cash per garden visited. This event takes place rain or shine. The tour includes gardens at the following locations:
Pocasset Perennial – 8 Peninsula Circle, Pocasset A lovely garden overlooking the Pocasset River and salt marsh lovingly tended for almost 50 years with mature perennial beds, seed-grown vegetables, cutting flower beds, and specimen plantings. Garden with Waterview, Unusual Plants, Pollinator Garden. Parking: street parking.
Highland Hideaway – 15 Clowes Drive, Falmouth 60 feet of perennial beds sit alongside native plants perched atop Sippewissett Highlands with views of Buzzards Bay. Extensive container plantings and abundant roses grace a professionally designed and planted gardenscape. Includes a Pollinator Garden. Parking: Parking available on Clear Pond Road.
Woodland Whimsy – 31 Glen Ave, North Falmouth Intimate gardens surround a reproduction Greek Revival cottage. Wander from the structured elegance of an enclosed rose garden into a tranquil woodland escape. Everywhere you turn, breathtaking hydrangeas steal the show, anchored by a magnificent 30-foot climbing hydrangea and a 20 foot by 20 foot limelight hydrangea. Lots of hydrangeas!. Parking: street parking.
Kleindinst Gardens – 39 Rockledge Drive, North Falmouth Surrounded by vernal wetlands, the yard naturally blends into the woods. Constantly evolving and changing, these hidden gardens are bordered by lichen-covered stone walls. Mature plantings include Japanese maples, Hinoki cypress, Japanese umbrella pine, balsam fir, and Japanese cedar. Perennial beds are extensive, including dozens of different species interspersed with vegetables and herbs as well as planters filled with colorful annuals. A primary focus is on hybridized, registered daylilies of which there are over 90 individual cultivars, many created by the gardener. New crosses under evaluation will be shown. The gardens are pollinator friendly with many native plants. A Japanese-style boat house completes the yard.
Historic Charm – 575 West Falmouth Highway, Falmouth Magnificent hydrangeas frame the historic West Falmouth Library’s 1879 entry.&nbsp; Just past the front entry, visitors can enjoy thoughtful plantings bordering the library lawn and an opportunity to relax on the flagstone patio. A volunteer-maintained perennial garden takes center stage with layered heirloom plantings.&nbsp; Lots of hydrangeas, unusual plants, creative prnaments, pollinator garden, dog-friendly, wheelchair and walker friendly.
