Dr. Randi Lebar will present an inspirational talk about the wild ride she has taken with her mother, pianist Elaine Lebar (born in 1928) who went viral on TikTok in 2020 while living in a memory care unit in Buzzards Bay. Specifically focusing on the magic and power of music in dementia, the talk features many videos of Elaine, and also includes lessons Randi learned along the way about finding meaning and joy in their relationship, in spite of her mother’s mental decline.&nbsp;The presentation is sure to entertain a wide audience, and it will be especially educational and hopeful for those dealing with a loved one in any stage of cognitive decline.
Elaine Lebar began playing piano at the age of 3.&nbsp;She graduated from the High School of Music and Art in NYC, received a bachelor’s in music from Brooklyn College and a master’s in music education from the University of Missouri. She was an accomplished performer, accompanist, educator and composer. While living with dementia, Lebar became a TikTok star with over 250,000&nbsp;followers, and was featured in both local and national news media.
Randi Lebar graduated from Cornell's College of Arts and Sciences in 1978 with a bachelor’s in Chemistry and went on to receive a master’s in 1982 from the University of Maryland School of Medicine.&nbsp;She then served for 11 years in the United States Navy, completing her Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Naval Hospital Oakland. After serving as an orthopaedic surgeon in Okinawa, Japan, Dr. Lebar left the Navy and moved to Maine where she continued her orthopaedic practice. Now retired from medicine, Lebar lives in Sagamore where she knits, crafts, gardens and pursues her passion for all forms of dance.

Using visual guides as a starting point, participants can create models such as DNA strands or articulated animals, then modify and expand their designs. The ZOOB pieces are used during the program so participants can experiment with how connection types affect movement, stability, and form.

Kids will explore how structures can move and connect by building with ZOOB construction toys. Using simple connection patterns, participants will create 2D and 3D geometric shapes and expand them into larger, more complex designs. The ZOOB pieces are used during the program so participants can experiment with different connections and discover how repeating simple patterns can lead to flexible, articulated structures.

The Abbot Public Library Cookbook Club aims to be a starting point for a conversation about food, recipes, and an exploration of the evolving American kitchen. At each meeting, a book or theme will be explored in discussions of recipe, construction, background, cooking, display and tasting.

Remember, you eat first with your eyes, so presentation is the invitation. As most cookbook recipes are written for 6 or 8 servings, that will be our tasting amount. Food should travel easily from home to the Library and require minimal heating and set up, keeping in mind that there are minimal kitchen facilities available at the Library.

Join Kevin Merrigan from The Power of Speech for an interest-based hangout and social group for kids ages 9-13. The topic for this month will be:&nbsp;Super Mario!&nbsp;Come hang out and connect with other kids who love Super Mario, too! Kids are welcome (but not required) to bring along a favorite Super Mario-themed item to share - whether it’s a toy, a book, or anything that sparks their interest.

In 1958, astronomer Frank Kameny was dismissed from the U.S. Army Map Service after refusing to answer questions about his sexual identity under President Eisenhower’s Executive Order 10450. That dismissal set him on a new course: Kameny became one of the nation’s first openly gay LGBT+ rights activists, founding a grassroots advocacy group and organizing the first demonstration for gay rights in front of the White House. Join Carolyn Crouch to explore how Kameny’s fight, sparked by the Lavender Scare of the 1950s, grew into a decades-long struggle for equality that would one day be recognized by President Barack Obama. This lecture will trace the pivotal moments of Kameny’s journey and the lasting impact of his activism.

Carolyn Crouch is the founder of Washington Walks, with a deep appreciation for D.C.'s rich history. After earning a master’s in acting from The Catholic University of America, her passion for walking expeditions took root. A scholar in English and art history, she also updates Fodor's 25 Best Washington, D.C. guide. Serving on the D.C. History Center's board, Crouch's influence extends beyond travel, impacting the historical community at large. A New England native, she brings a diverse perspective to her work.

Lectures with Road Scholar: Frank Kameny - Trailblazing the Gay Rights Movement

It’s tick season! With tick populations on the rise here in New England and beyond, it’s important to be aware not just of Lyme but of all tick-borne diseases. Once considered a “woods of New England” problem, Lyme disease has now been reported in every state except Hawaii, with 476,000 new cases every year—more than HIV and breast cancer combined. Author Jennifer Crystal learned the hard way what can happen when you miss a tick bite. Join Crystal as she reads from her memoir, “One Tick Stopped the Clock,” explains the signs and symptoms of tick-borne illness, and gives tips for safely enjoying the outdoors.

Sidelined from her dream job as a ski instructor in the Rocky Mountains, Crystal fought not only for her health but also for validation and support. She struggled with the identity loss that occurs when you can no longer fulfill expectations or do what you love. “One Tick Stopped the Clock” is a narrative of resilience and perseverance that demonstrates what it means to refocus broken dreams and create a new normal. Blending medical mystery with wit, sensitivity, and a sharp understanding of the human experience, “One Tick Stopped the Clock” offers hope and inspiration for anyone who can’t go back but instead must move forward at a new pace.
Jennifer Crystal is now a local author, educator, and writing coach. She runs the&nbsp;<a href="https://grubstreet.org/write/writing-to-heal-immersive" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Writing to Heal Immersive Program at Grub Street Creative Writing Center</a>. For more than a decade, she has written a weekly column for the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.globallymealliance.org/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Global Lyme Alliance</a>. She is a Senior Writer for Harvard Health Publishing, where she also served as the Patient Experience Representative for the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.lyme.health.harvard.edu/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Lyme Wellness Initiative</a>. This past winter and spring, Salem Sound Coastwatch’s School to Sea program led a Drifter Program with local students in the Salem Sound community with the help of an awarded MIT Sea Grant. The drifters are low cost and student-built devices that track currents via satellite telemetry. While giving real-time data on currents in the Gulf of Maine that contributes to NOAA’s Integrated Ocean Observing System and validates numerical models, students are also able to collect and analyze the data for their own education purposes. This program has been running since 2004 and was founded by the Gulf of Maine Lobster Foundation, the Southern Maine Community College (SMCC), and NOAA’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center, and since then, more than 1,500 different drifters have been deployed by about 100 schools!&nbsp;
Registration is required. Attendance to join in person is limited to 50 attendants, or attend online via Zoom. Alex Borreil is an Educator for the School to Sea program for Salem Sound Coastwatch and holds a bachelor’s in Environmental Studies from Hobart and William Smith Colleges. In addition to being an educator, she was also the Principal Investigator for the drifter program. Previous to coming to Salem, Borreil spent a collective six years leading and creating field and classroom-based marine science courses and research projects for students in the Caribbean and Florida Keys. As a New England Native, her goal is to inspire young scientists to continue learning and protecting their local coastlines through hands-on educational experiences.&nbsp;

Americans are living longer than ever before, but longer life does not always mean better life. As healthcare advances and lifespans extend, many families are asking difficult questions about affordability, caregiving, ageism and quality of life. In partnership with The John A. Hartford Foundation, join us for this special screening of “Aging in America: Survive or Thrive,” a PBS documentary narrated by Martin Sheen and based on Dr. Robert Butler’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book, “Why Survive?” This thoughtful film explores the challenges and opportunities of aging in the United States today. Following our screening, we’ll enjoy a live discussion with producers Dr. Ken Dychtwald and Neil Steinberg, using questions submitted in our Q&amp;A by participants like you.

The Boys &amp; Girls Club of Greater Salem is hosting its annual event, Growing Great Futures, on May 14, 2026 at Danversport, 131 Elliott Street, Danvers from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This casual, family friendly event invites participants to join the Club staff and kids in activities typically found at the afterschool sites. Enjoy delicious food and a cash bar. Play board games, try the putting green, sink an opponent in a corn hole game or make paper flower crafts. Join in the Guess Who is the Club Alumni game. Prizes and a fun time will be available along with a silent, live and cause auction.
The Boys &amp; Girls Club of Greater Salem is the second oldest Club in the United States, providing safe, caring out of school time options for the families of Salem and surrounding communities. MARBLEHEAD, MA — The Marblehead Garden Club, celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, invites the community to its Plant Sale on Saturday, May 16, from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m. at the historic Jeremiah Lee Mansion, 161 Washington Street, Marblehead. Admission to the event is free, and early arrival is encouraged for the best selection. Cards, cash, checks, and Venmo are accepted.&nbsp;
Set on the beautiful grounds of the Lee Mansion, the sale offers a wide variety of plants for every garden. Shoppers will find perennials for sun and shade, colorful annuals, a variety of dahlia tubers, native wildflowers, culinary plants including herbs, and selections for ground cover and rock gardens.&nbsp;
The Plant Sale is the Garden Club’s primary fundraiser, supporting the care and maintenance of the Lee Mansion’s organic gardens, which prioritize native and historically-appropriate plantings.&nbsp;
A highlight of the sale is a curated selection of plants featured in the Lee Mansion Gardens. These cherished favorites include trillium, Solomon’s seal, lady’s mantle, wild ginger, single or double white bloodroot, and mayapple. The MGC Plant Sale also features a strong selection of native New England plants that support local pollinators.&nbsp;

Proceeds from the sale help ensure the continued care of the historic grounds. Built in 1768 for Colonel Jeremiah Lee, a prominent Marblehead patriot in the years leading up to the American Revolution, the site remains a treasured part of the community. The Marblehead Garden Club is committed to keeping its gardens flourishing for future generations.&nbsp;

The 18th annual Salem Arts Festival returns June 5-7, 2026, as a special "Salem 400+" edition celebrating four centuries of Salem's creative heritage. This free, family-friendly event transforms historic downtown Salem into an immersive artistic experience, attracting over 10,000 visitors annually.
What to Expect
Explore a juried visual arts gallery at Old Town Hall featuring 60+ works by regional artists competing for Best in Show and the John Boris Memorial Award. Browse a curated artisan marketplace across downtown Salem on Saturday and Sunday, with local makers offering ceramics, jewelry, textiles, woodworking, prints, and more.
Experience live performances across multiple outdoor stages throughout the weekend, including music spanning folk to hip hop, dance from flamenco to contemporary, circus arts, poetry, and more. Watch 12 talented muralists transform blank canvases into vibrant 8'×4' artworks during the Mural Slam at Artists' Row, then vote for your favorite via QR code to determine the People's Choice winner.
Participate in hands-on art-making activities, contribute to the festival's signature Community Art Project, and kick off the weekend Friday evening with the Tiny Art Spree—a fast-paced art exchange fundraiser where $20 tickets give you the chance to take home original artwork.

Essex Street and Front Street close to vehicles Saturday and Sunday (8 AM-7 PM), creating pedestrian-friendly festival zones.
Free admission to all events and activities. Bathrooms are available at Artists' Row, the NPS Visitor Center, and Destination Salem. Rain contingency plans ensure performances continue regardless of the weather.
