Learn about the crucial leadership of John Glover during his time as Colonel of the Marblehead Regiment in this talk on Wednesday, Aug. 26 at 7 p.m., presented by Larry Sands, captain of the Glover’s Marblehead Regiment reenactment unit.
Celebrated as the most famous of Marblehead’s hundreds of Revolutionary servicemen, Glover’s capable and resolute leadership of his Continental Army regiment during the war’s first year and a half saved the war effort itself. Despite many soldiers leaving to serve as captains and crews on privateer vessels, nearly 600 men and teenaged boys signed up to serve in the rebel Patriot army in June 1775. This talk will primarily discuss Colonel Glover’s time as commander of the so-called “Marblehead Regiment,” and it will also focus on the pivotal last four months of 1776 - from the crucial evacuation of Long Island that saved Commander-in-Chief George Washington’s entire army of 9,000 men and equipment, to the pivotal December Crossing of the Delaware River in dangerous conditions. Sands will also discuss the years following the war, including Glover’s promotion to General in February 1777.&nbsp;

Larry Sands is the captain of Glover’s Marblehead Regiment, a reenactment unit established in 1974. A member for over 35 years, he has filled all leadership roles and has participated in reenactments of every engagement in which the original regiment served.

This event is presented in collaboration with the Marblehead 250 Committee and Abbot Public Library.

Shell Builders Workshop with Salem Sound Coastwatch

This three-week writing workshop is designed to help students ages 8-12 strengthen their writing skills and enjoy the creative writing process, all while celebrating America's 250th anniversary. Each session will combine age-appropriate instruction with entertaining and engaging activities to reinforce core writing fundamentals, using America's founding and history as inspiration for original work.
Students will practice developing narratives, work on sentence structure and word choice, and develop their creative voices as writers. They will leave the workshop with a collection of their own original work to share, an enthusiasm for storytelling, and sharper descriptive writing skills to take into the school year.
This program is limited to 15 students ages 8-12, and online registration is required. Writers of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, essay, and other forms of written expression are invited to join a monthly roundtable of similarly inclined individuals. Attendees will share works in progress, engage in constructive critique with others, and improve their craft through thoughtful discussion. Writer Margo W. R. Steiner will lead the group.

Abbot Public Library Writers Group meets on the first Wednesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in the Marblehead Room at Abbot Public Library (with the exception of Oct.7).
Margo W. R. Steiner is a freelance writer, copy editor, and speechwriter. Before her retirement, she wrote speeches and op-eds for the president of Salem State University. Currently, she teaches obituary-writing classes in person and online. Previously, she led a weekly writing group, Everyone Has a Story, at the Marblehead Council on Aging. She has served as senior writer for Doctor of Dentistry and MDNews. Her freelance work has appeared in multiple publications.
For many years, she has served as chair of the Marblehead Festival of Arts Literary Festival. Prior to that, she was winner of the Marcia Doehner Award and the Award for Outstanding Work, both for poetry, in juried competition at the 2010 Marblehead Festival of Arts, and the winner of the Best in Show Award for fiction at the 2011 festival. She is currently a member of the Writers Group at the Salem Athenaeum.

Captain Nicholson Broughton gained fame as the captain of the even more famous schooner Hannah, the “first” official privateer vessel sent out from Marblehead and Beverly waters under a commission from George Washington in service of his Continental Army, on Sept. 2, 1775. Come learn about Broughton’s role as captain of one of the ten regiments and how he was court martialed by Commander-in-Chief George Washington.

Donald Doliber was appointed as Marblehead’s Town Historian after 24 years as an award-winning history teacher, and was selected as the "Outstanding American History Teacher in the United States" by the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.), followed by 17 years as an assistant high school principal. His ancestors arrived in Marblehead in the 1630s, and were fishermen, Selectmen, and merchants in the early community and later, with a few serving in the Revolutionary War.
