In the Age of Immediacy, information flashes at warp speed, demanding our attention but providing little in return. Absorbing our world is often a thoughtless endeavor. Whether through a camera, mirror, or device, we are in a constant state of surveilling and being surveilled. Yet we understand that we cannot doom scroll our way to fulfillment. What is attention without intention? How can we, instead, be present in ourselves? How can we not just look, but see? The classic child’s game of I Spy demands we stop, look closely, and find. Likewise, the exhibition invites us to linger, to look again, to notice what seemed invisible only moments before. The artists create immersive worlds full of color, sound, texture, and repetition. They encourage the eye to wander through both the micro and the macro. They build worlds full of whimsy and mystery. The work in Eye Spy observes itself as much as it is observed. What emerges is joyous clarity and peaceful interiority. There is no doom, there is only discovery.

Sophie Maguire is an artist and landscape architect living in Baltimore City. Her practice focuses on storytelling, intimacy between the human &amp; nonhuman, landscape as theater, and the meaning of resiliency. She works through many mediums including, choreography, collage, cooking, drawing, embroidery, performance, writing and, most recently, small metal work. A former designer with the City of Baltimore Recreation and Parks Capital Division, Sophie holds an MA in Landscape Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. She is currently a Visiting Instructor at Morgan State University. Meg Baldwin holds an MA in Landscape Architecture from the University of Virginia. She is the founder of Garden Practice, a landscape architecture and garden design practice specializing in ecological and bio-diverse garden plantings and landscape design.

This exhibition brings together artists who are curious about the lives unfolding all around us: not just those of humans, but the many beings, materials, and systems with whom we share the world. The phrase “more-than-human” reminds us that we are part of a vast web of animals, plants, microbes, machines, weather, chemicals and infrastructure. These artists imagine what it might mean to meet those presences halfway and to consider inner worlds we can’t fully know. They approach “nature” not as something distant or pure, but as it exists now: shaped by technology, politics, industry, and everyday life. As a result, familiar boundaries between nature and culture, human and machine, organic and manufactured begin to dissolve. Leaning into this complexity, the artists ask us to reconsider what kinship might mean today, and how we might live more thoughtfully within a world where even our oddest neighbors are part of the family. Guest curated by Lynn Tomlinson and Danielle d’Amico, Department of Electronic Media &amp; Film.

Join guest curators Lynn Tomlinson and Danielle d’Amico and artists Billy Friebele, Fanni Somogyi, and Mollye Bendell in a lively discussion on the intersection of art, nature, technology, and human relationships. Billy Friebele is an interdisciplinary artist working at the intersection between digital, kinetic, and sculptural forms. Friebele is an Associate Professor of Art at Loyola University Maryland and received his MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art. Fanni Somogyi is a sculptor and writer originally from Budapest, Hungary. Her practice focuses on networking systems, modes of connection and acts of remembering. She investigates how humans and technology have developed a symbiotic relationship, which results in the constant presence of smart devices in one’s life. In addition to showing widely, Somogyi has had numerous public art commissions. She received her MFA in Metalsmithing at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI. Mollye Bendell is an interdisciplinary artist with a focus on immersive and electronic media. She uses the intangible nature of electronic media as a metaphor for exploring vulnerability, visibility, and longing in a world that can feel isolating. Bendell is an Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Maryland and director of the Maril Gallery. She received her MFA from MFA in Intermedia and Digital Arts from UMBC.

Cindy Cheng explores the relationship between drawings and objects through installation and complex constructions. Cheng likes thinking about how both natural and built structures may act as an incubator for narrative, memory and reflections on the physical and abstract self. She writes: “Everything that I do is based around failure... with sculpture, I’m functioning at the edge of my ability and the edge of my understanding of material.” In addition to exhibiting and publishing widely, Cheng was a finalist for the 2016 Trawick Prize, won the Sondheim Prize in 2017 and in 2018 was awarded a Joan Mitchell Foundation grant. She earned a BA from Mount Holyoke College and an M.F.A. from the Maryland Institute College of Art.

Tamini blends the beautiful and the grotesque nature of consumption, emphasizing the feedback loop between the consumed and the consumer. Through her paintings and installations, she decontextualizes brains, veins, neurons, and organs into captivating conglomerations. Her work is a love letter to we who eat, and the rituals which satiate our minds and bodies.
