About The Outsiders on Broadway
Some stories stay true forever. The Outsiders, E. Hinton's beloved 1967 novel and the basis for Francis Ford Coppola's iconic film, has found new life as one of Broadway's most celebrated musicals in years.
Set in 1967 Tulsa, Oklahoma, the musical follows Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade, and their chosen family of outsiders, a group of teenagers searching for belonging, loyalty, and purpose in a world that may never accept them.
The show features a book by Adam Rapp and Justin Levine, with music and lyrics by Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance) and Levine. The score blends folk, bluegrass, Americana, and rock, a sound that fits the gritty world of mid-century Oklahoma.
The production made its Broadway debut in 2024 and has been a phenomenon ever since. The Outsiders received 12 Tony Award nominations and won four, including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical for Danya Taymor. The production also took home Tony Awards for Best Lighting Design of a Musical and Best Sound Design of a Musical.
Critics and audiences have been equally swept away. As the New York Theatre Guide put it, "The Outsiders will make you sit up and take notice. The climactic gang war surges in such stylized, cinematic fashion that my audience cheered."
