This August, Battery Dance returns to the waterfront in spectacular fashion, transforming Wagner Park into a vibrant hub of movement, music, and cultural celebration in partnership with Battery Park City Authority. On Tuesday, August 11, 2026, the performances officially begin as the Festival proudly celebrates its legacy as New York City’s longest-running free public dance festival—an unforgettable annual tradition that brings together extraordinary artists and audiences from around the world.
The 45th Annual Battery Dance Festival marks a milestone moment, honoring 50 years of Battery Dance and the visionary leadership of founder and Artistic Director Jonathan Hollander. This landmark edition showcases a dazzling, multicultural lineup of artists, featuring bold voices and movement traditions from across the globe—uniting genres, cultures, and creative perspectives in a powerful celebration of artistic expression.“Jonathan Hollander founded Battery Dance in 1976, and we are very proud to celebrate our&nbsp;legendary founder’s 50 years of leadership this summer with these spectacular&nbsp;performances,”&nbsp;said Executive Director Emad M. Returning to the stunning waterfront at Wagner Park, the Festival unfolds over a full week of dynamic programming. With a distinct theme each night, the Festival remains rooted in its core mission: to present an eclectic spectrum of dance to New York audiences, expand access to the arts for all, and uplift emerging New York-based companies as vital voices in today’s dance landscape. Noguchi Taiso is a Japanese body release practice developed by Michizo Noguchi that emphasizes relaxation, fluidity, and responsiveness to gravity. Widely practiced by Butoh dancers, it serves as a foundational training method for cultivating receptivity, effortless movement, and bodily awareness. Beginners are welcome.
This&nbsp;program is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature, and the New York Department of Cultural Affairs, and the City Council.
Melissa Lohman&nbsp;is a teacher, performer, choreographer, and visual artist from New York City, currently based in Rome, Italy. She received her BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2000. Since the mid-1990s, she has created performances for theaters, museums, galleries, and unconventional spaces internationally. Her artistic practice explores inhabiting a space and being observed, rather than presenting something to an audience.
Recent projects include&nbsp;Lean&nbsp;(2026), a performance-installation with Flavio Arcangeli presented at the Nervi Pavilion in Rome for Open House Rome XIV Edition;&nbsp;Contemplate Your Navel!&nbsp;(2025), a solo exhibition featuring performances, drawings, video, sculpture, and a series of movement and drawing workshops; and&nbsp;Tramite&nbsp;(2024), a performance created within Fabrizio Crisafulli's light installation of the same title, presented in the burial chamber of the Pyramid of Caius Cestius in Rome as part of&nbsp;Piramide Contemporaneo.
In 2023, Melissa performed a durational work for Crisafulli's installation&nbsp;Transiti&nbsp;at the Academy of Fine Arts of Carrara. In 2022, she danced alongside her Noguchi Taiso teacher, Mari Osanai, in&nbsp;Deposition&nbsp;at the Kyoto International Butoh Festival. That same year, she collaborated with Flavio Arcangeli on&nbsp;Across, a site-specific performance at MAXXI Museum in Rome presented during&nbsp;The Heretical Body: Butoh Dance from Its Inception Until Today. Earlier projects include&nbsp;A Sweet Topia&nbsp;(2021), a site-specific performance and solo exhibition at Museo delle Mura in Rome. From 2018 to 2020, she was an invited performer at the New York Butoh Institute Festival.
Vangeline&nbsp;is a New York–based teacher, choreographer, and dancer specializing in Japanese Butoh. As the artistic director of the Vangeline Theater/New York Butoh Institute, she is widely recognized for her rigorous, research-driven approach to Butoh and for expanding the form’s relevance in the 21st century. Her work actively champions diversity and inclusion within the field, creating space for historically underrepresented voices. She carries forward the legacy of Butoh while infusing it with contemporary relevance—through activism, research, and performance.

At the heart of Vangeline’s philosophy is the belief that Butoh can be a tool for both personal and collective transformation. Her work reflects a deep commitment to integrating the many dimensions of the human experience—beauty and darkness alike—and reintegrating society’s marginalized voices.
Vangeline’s choreography has been presented internationally in Chile, Germany, Italy, France, Finland, Denmark, the UK, Mexico, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan. She is the recipient of a 2022 National Endowment for the Arts Dance Award for her groundbreaking project&nbsp;The Slowest Wave, which explores the intersection of Butoh and neuroscience. She was also a 2022–2023 Gibney Dance in Process resident artist, a 2018 NYFA/NYSCA Fellow in Choreography for&nbsp;Elsewhere, and the winner of the 2015 Gibney Dance Social Action Award and the 2019 Janet Arnold Award from the Society of Antiquaries of London.
Her work has been widely acclaimed, both nationally and internationally, with critics praising its power, precision, and emotional resonance. Reviews have appeared in publications including&nbsp;The New York Times&nbsp;(“captivating”) and the&nbsp;Los Angeles Times&nbsp;(“moves with the clockwork deliberation of a practiced Japanese Butoh artist”), to name just a few.

Founded in 2006 by David Staller, GTG has carved a permanent niche for the work of George Bernard Shaw within the social and cultural life of New York City, and, through the Project Shaw reading series, made history in 2009 as the first company ever to present performances of every one of Shaw's 65 plays (including full-length works, one-acts and sketches). The American Irish Historical Society&nbsp;(AIHS) was founded in Boston in 1897 to document, commemorate, and interrogate the story of the Irish in America. The Company began to tour in the early 1990s, originally on the East Coast, and later internationally. Kaatsbaan Cultural Park

For three Saturdays in a row, Kaatsbaan Cultural Park presents the 2026 Annual Festival at 120 Broadway, Tivoli, NY 12583. The festival begins on August 29, 2026, and continues on September 5 and September 12. Each Saturday will feature a distinct lineup and focus.
The festival opener is an all-day celebration filled with live music and geared towards all ages. Dance performances include Calpulli Danza Mexicana, Ballez, and Anna Sperber, and an evening concert by Valerie June. Food available for purchase on site by Hudson Valley vendors.
The 2026 Annual Festival also marks the return of Kaatsbaan’s outdoor Mountain Stage with its expansive views of the Catskill Mountains and immersion in the natural beauty of the Hudson Valley. Most performances are an hour or less, are all ages, and the festival schedule permits an easeful and day-long schedule of art and nature alongside Tivoli’s walkable downtown amenities. Tickets will be offered on an incentive-based, affordable structure. 2026 Visual Arts Exhibition, Earthly Delights. Artistic works evoking planets, plants, insects, and other biological forms erupting out of the mystical Kaatsbaan landscape. These unique pieces created by nine contemporary artists working predominantly in the Hudson Valley offer an inspiring alchemy of structure, form, beauty, and soul. Artists include Laura Battle, Thea Berman, Sharon Broit, Gaston Lachaise, Ian McMahon, Virginia L. Montgomery, Portia Munson, Kris Perry, Aurora Robson, and Nadia Yaron. The exhibition is curated by Hilary Greene.

Labor Day weekend programming centers on individual playwrights reading and performing their own works: Rachel Jendrzejewski (through collaborators Terry Hempfling and Lauren Lewis), Jeanette Harrison, Ty Defoe, Vickie Ramirez, Rose Jarboe, Sylvan Oswald, Jim Fletcher, Lucy Sexton, and Adrienne Truscott. A musical double-bill closes out the day with The Bearded Ladies Cabaret sing-along and concert/dance party byCRICKETS (JD Samson, Roddy Bottum, and Michael O’Neill). Books for sale provided by the artists and Oblong Books. Food vendors include Pamana Kitchen’s plant-based Filipino cuisine.

Playwrights’ Platform—in which playwrights read and perform their short plays—is a newly created live anthology, responsive to the needs of boundary-bending playwrights and focused on the stories central to their writing. Audiences are invited into the hearts and minds of these award-winning theater artists to explore each turn of phrase and unique worldview. Program 1 features Six Nations: One Fire by Vickie Ramirez, Ty Defoe, and Jeanette Harrison (Democracy Cycle commission awardees); encyclopedia by Rachel Jendrzejewski; and Mx. Rogers’ Neighborhood: You Can Never Go Down The Drain by Rose Jarboe.

Vangeline Theater/New York Butoh Institute has partnered with ELF and the legendary New York artist Machine Dazzle to create MAN WOMAN, a collaboration between Butoh dancers Akihito Ichihara (Sankai Juku) and Vangeline.

Ichihara and Vangeline have developed MAN WOMAN during New York residencies at the New York Butoh Institute, Chelsea Factory, Monira Foundation, and Mercury Store in 2024.

Machine Dazzle has created original costumes for this 60-minute piece and Ray Barragan Sweeten has composed the music.

MAN WOMAN is a 60-minute interdisciplinary Butoh duet about the search for intimacy and the complexities of human connection. Choreographed and performed by acclaimed Butoh artists Akihito Ichihara (Japan) and Vangeline (U.S.), the work draws inspiration from the seminal 1960 photo book Man and Woman by Japanese photographer Eikoh Hosoe, which featured Tatsumi Hijikata—the founder of Butoh—and his wife, Motofuji.
 
Ichihara and Vangeline each come from different Butoh backgrounds; Ichihara from Sankai Juku, or what could be considered “classical” Butoh, while Vangeline’s 20 years of Butoh expertise was informed by her prior experience as a jazz and burlesque dancer. The artists imagine this encounter as cultural cross-pollination: the creation of something new and original choreographically, challenging aesthetic expectations and carrying Butoh into the 21st century.

Unforgotten: Butoh for 9/11&nbsp;is an ensemble work commemorating the victims of 9/11. The 60-minute Butoh dance piece will be choreographed by&nbsp;Vangeline&nbsp;and be performed by an ensemble of several dancers with live musical accompaniment by renowned cellist&nbsp;Katinka Kleijn.
Dancers:&nbsp;Dani Cole, Yazmin Gonzalez, Alaisha Sharma, Zo Roze, Madelyn Sher, Eilish Henderson, and Suyi Xu.
Every year for the past two decades, Vangeline Theater has held public 9/11 commemorative performances in New York. For the past ten years, we have performed these offerings in Times Square, with a special dedication for the firefighters, policemen, and women who lost their lives on 9/11. Our annual performances in Times Square on 9/11 hold deep symbolic and cultural significance. The act of performing Butoh—a meditative, expressive dance form—on such a solemn occasion creates a space for collective mourning, remembrance, and healing. Given Times Square’s status as a global landmark and cultural epicenter, the performances serve as a poignant tribute to the victims of 9/11, while also offering an artistic reflection on resilience and loss.

ABOUT THE BROADWAY MAGIC HOUR
Jim Vines&nbsp;and&nbsp;Carl Mercurio&nbsp;have each been performing magic all their lives, and they met 10 years ago when they were both booked to perform in the same magic-variety show in Coney Island. Jim and Carl became friends and started performing together in venues throughout the tristate area, eventually collaborating on a family magic show, which debuted in 2022 at the North Fork Community Theatre in Long Island.
Fast forward to May 2024, when Jim was on a phone call with Richard Brooks, the head talent booker for the Broadway Comedy Club and Greenwich Village Comedy Club. Rich mentioned that while there were a variety of great magic shows in New York City, he had noticed something was missing—a big family-friendly event that could be enjoyed by kids, parents, friends, and anyone looking for a feel-good outing. Rich suggested that a family magic show in Midtown that brings families together for an unforgettable experience filled with joy, laughter, and wonder could be a hit. Jim told Rich about the family magic show that he and Carl were already performing and mentioned that they had been looking for the perfect venue in which to regularly present the show. Rich was enthusiastic. It was meant to be! In a moment of inspiration, Jim and Carl came up with the name The Broadway Magic Hour. Now it was time to put it on the historic Broadway Comedy Club stage. The NYC debut of the Broadway Magic Hour took place on Saturday, August 3, 2024 - and to everyone's delight, the show quickly sold out. They followed up by adding more dates, and every show had a full house, proving that the city truly needed this show. A few months later, Time Out NY rated The Broadway Magic Hour as one of the Best Off-Broadway Shows for Kids &amp; Families, as well as one of the Best Magic Shows in NYC.

Dances Patrelle&nbsp;(dP) is a dynamic professional ballet company celebrating its 39th year! dP presents two annual seasons in New York – the timeless holiday tradition,&nbsp;The Yorkville Nutcracker, and a spring repertory season featuring world premieres and classic Patrelle favorites. Mr. Patrelle’s body of work includes over 50 original ballets choreographed for Dances Patrelle, and spans an incredibly wide range of styles, from his beloved American Songbook collection to such contemporary classics as&nbsp;Madame X, Macbeth&nbsp;and&nbsp;Rhapsody in Blue. Heralded by Lynn Garafola in&nbsp;Dance Magazine&nbsp;as a choreographer with “a personal vision…classical because it is rooted in metaphor and symbolic language [and] populist because of its legibility and broad cultural resonance.” Patrelle has also cultivated a long-time collaboration with composer Patrick Soluri, commissioning four original scores including 2009's&nbsp;Murder at the Masque&nbsp;for dP's 20th Anniversary. FRICTION: a dance exploring AI, humanity, and the sparks where tension, technology, and fractured relationships collide and ignite.
It prickles your skin. Pricks. Fastens. Adheres. Sticks. Is Stylized. Edgy. Of this moment. Fault Lines. Schisms. Chasms. Seismic action. Tectonic shifts. Land and people and minds. Tension. Fraying. Relationships. Relations to Self. Friction.
Friction is that moment a fire can start. It cannot start without. Neither intercourse. Neither love. Straddling the lines separating technology from humanity, a theme DGDC has portrayed since its first evening-length work, Plasma Field in 1999, through 2023’s e-Motion, investigating sentience in AI, ahead of the curve [Dance Magazine on e-Motion].
What’s the divide between artificial intelligence and real intelligence?
Daniel’s choreographic style was best articulated by dance critic Deborah Jowitt: “blending casualness with precision.” In FRICTION, Gwirtzman is pushing both the casualness and the precision to the max. In the group section “LARGE LANGUAGE MODEL,” which previewed June 25/26 at New York City Center’s IN THE STUDIOprogram, the dancers become bytes, pushing against their will, against their consciousness, executing dense, intricate movements at relentless speeds. The dance contains an archive of excerpts from dances in the Company’s repertory, pieces of dances torn up, recontextualized, fed to the machine and regurgitated.
FRICTION captures the tensions and tenor of our time, days before the midterm election, harnessing the fraught emotions that characterize our incivil society.

The score has been generated in full in collaboration with the large language model Claude. Daniel has used a range of additional programs to generate various voices, which mirror the thicket of data on display in the dance.

ABOUT DANIEL GWIRTZMAN DANCE COMPANY
Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company, known for its optimistic ethos, was formed in 1998. Since its inception, it has demonstrated a commitment to education, operating with the philosophy and programming that everyone can join the dance. Incorporating dance and story into the film medium has been a consistent practice along with creating original programming for the stage. The repertory has earned praise for its humor, musicality, stylistic diversity, and accessibility. The Company’s acclaimed creation, “Dance With Us,” a free online educational resource, received leadership support from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and is designed to demystify choreography and increase comfort viewing and speaking about dance. The digital resource showcases the Company’s decade-long practice working in the dance for camera genre. Festival, which Culturebot reviewed as “profoundly chilling,” noting Daniel’s performance as “masterful.” Also in 2025, Framing Ménerbes, a film created by the Company in Provence, premiered in France, followed by its US premiere at the Dolby Screening Room in Manhattan with guests Donald Byrd and Jovani Furlan leading the post-screening conversation. Since then, the film has screened in theaters in Upstate New York—Binghamton, Ithaca, and Rochester—and in Ann Arbor, MI and Vancouver, WA. The film will screen next in San Francisco at the Alliance Française in January 2027. Other highlights include performances at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, The Kennedy Center, Battery Dance Festival, Fire Island Dance Festival, Bryant Park, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and Jazz at Lincoln Center.
