The novel's title draws its inspiration from the famous opening lines spoken by the Three Witches in William Shakespeare's Macbeth. In this story, the ghost light—a traditional single bulb left burning on a dark theater stage—serves as a supernatural portal. The plot follows a protagonist named Lydia, whose spirit is pulled through the ghost light's portal, transporting her back in time to New York City's Bowery Theatre in the year 1849.

Hannah Arendt (1906–1975) was known to possess a “genius for friendship.” A Jew in Nazi Germany, an exile in Paris and New York, and an uncompromising critic of postwar orthodoxies, she survived and flourished through friendships that were intellectually intense, complicated, and morally demanding. Her tribe of outsiders included thinkers as disparate as Karl Jaspers, Hans Jonas, Mary McCarthy, Gershom Scholem, Heinrich Blücher, and Martin Heidegger.
This book explores how these friendships shaped Arendt’s political thinking. Berkowitz weaves Arendt’s life, thought, and friendships into a powerful meditation on our present moment. In an age of mass loneliness, ideological certainty, and civic breakdown, A World We Share connects democracy not to consensus or moral purity but to our capacity to maintain relationships with others we do not agree with—and cannot fully understand.

Bill Allen's work echoes beloved voices from poetry, poets, history and politics and a look at the natural world in an era of climate action, with personal memories and a fervent look into language, love and the ties that bind us to each other. There's humor, humanism, a music of the earth, irreverence, a quest for ethical answers in a world titling off its axis. Poems echo Lowell and Bishop, Pasolini, Philip Levine and Muriel Rukeyser, with their spirits of questioning and grace. Also a visual artist, Bill's work can be seen at www.ekphrases.com.He is the recipient of a 2009 National Endowment for the Arts fellowship in Creative Writing and has published five previous books of poems. Bill worked at the United Nations in New York in writing and technology communications for many years after teaching at Cooper Union and the School of Visual Arts, hoping to bring a poetry of humanism and heart to the poetry canon. He's currently working with a conservation advisory group to explore and inventory Hudson Valley local habitats and climate needs.
