National Academy of Sciences

This premier event honors and celebrates the prestigious incoming cohort of 22 ARCS MWC Scholars pursuing significant research in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) at our five partner universities (identified below).
The event underscores the importance of ARCS MWC funding in today’s changing financial landscape for scientists and engineers. Moreover, the sustained technical leadership of our keynote speaker, an ARCS MWC Scholar Alum, illustrates the impact that ARCS support has on U.S. innovation, competitiveness, and national security. Attend this event to learn more about ARCS MWC and STEM philanthropy!
A reception highlighted by a poster session showcasing each Scholar’s cutting-edge research will open the event. ARCS MWC is extremely pleased to welcome Dr. Gurpartap “GP” Sandhoo as the 2026 SAR keynote speaker. Dr. Sandhoo is the Director of the Space Development Agency and the Space Force Portfolio Acquisition Executive for Missile Warning and Tracking. A renowned national security and technology leader across the private and public sectors, he is a veteran of more than 36 years in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. Dr. Sandhoo was an ARCS MWC Scholar during 1995-97 while he was earning his DSc at The George Washington University. In his keynote presentation, he will discuss his career and how ARCS made a difference, both while he was a scholar and now. Co-Presidents Julie Hohl and Jane Riddle say “Dr. Sandhoo’s career reflects the heights our Scholar Alums reach as leaders advancing U.S. competitiveness and national security, emphasizing the continuing importance of the ARCS MWC mission, particularly now given reduced U.S. funding for science and engineering.”
More information about the event and registration can be found at www.RSVPtoARCS-MWC.org.ARCS MWC, chartered in 1968, has donated $9.3 million through 825 Scholar awards at its five local partner universities, forwarding 100% of corporate, foundation, and individual donations each year to chapter Scholars. ARCS MWC enables innovative STEM inventions in areas such as biomedical research, space exploration, and computing complexity (among others), advancing U.S. competitiveness. Contact: Co-Presidents Julie Hohl and Jane Riddle, mwcpresident@arcsfoundation.org

The Historic Sydenstricker Schoolhouse will celebrate National Miniatures Month by hosting a special exhibition presented by Mount Vernon Miniatures with a special exhibit and vintage dollhouse auction. The event is free, open to the public, and offers an immersive look into a fascinating craft that captivates creators and collectors of all ages. Free parking is available on-site and at the church parking lot directly across the street.
·The exhibition will showcase an extraordinary collection of work by local miniature artisans, spanning a diverse array of scales, styles, and media. Visitors will see highly detailed displays, including tiny secret gardens, a lush conservatory, a sweeping Venetian villa, formal room displays, stylized shops, and a charming collection of themed cottages. Guests will marvel at the smallest details, including exquisite dollhouses scaled to fit inside other miniature houses, fully functioning tiny appliances, micro-instruments, miniature toys, and even an operating, tiny model train set.
·In addition to viewing the displays, attendees can explore the rich history and evolution of the miniatures craft. A dedicated hands-on activity table will invite guests of all ages to assemble their own miniature model of the historic schoolhouse to take home. Representatives from the Mount Vernon Miniatures Club will be available to answer questions, share techniques, and discuss their ongoing activities.

The collectible, fully electrified dollhouse has been beautifully restored, and furnished by a professional interior designer in collaboration with the miniatures club. The auction opens for bids on October 3rd, with all proceeds supporting the ongoing preservation and restoration of the schoolhouse as it approaches its landmark 100th birthday in 2028. Additional auction details will be available at the venue.

One of the scariest haunted trails in the DMV returns this fall — HAUNT: Dark Encounters, October 3–30, 2026 at the Workhouse Arts Center.
Now in its 13th year, this isn't your typical haunted house — it's a trail. And this year, the Workhouse is ditching theatrical gimmicks for raw, unrelenting tension. You'll be guided through dense woodland to uncover the mystery of five friends who vanished in 1996. Immersive. Unsettling. Built to make every shadow feel personal.
Why it's worth it:
· Exclusive Access — Experience the trail before the public opening · Great Visuals — Dense woods, professional scare actors, detailed sets · The Story — A found camcorder, a 1996 mystery, a descent into the unknown · Post-Scare — The Rizer Pavilion opens with a DJ, themed cocktails, and bites
Tickets are $39. Want to skip the line and get front-of-the-trail access? Add-on fees available. And don't forget to check our website for discounts — $5 off, $10 off, and more.
Recommended for ages 13+. Run dates: October 3–30 (Fridays, Saturdays, and select Sundays).
Plus: Sensory Friendly Night, Saturday, October 17, 6–7 PM. Email workhousehaunt@workhousearts.org to reserve your spot.
