Forest Exploration Center

We’re collecting acorns to help future forests grow! This special stewardship activity will teach you how to identify red and white oaks and their acorns, provide a guided off-trail experience in the Forest, and contribute to Wisconsin’s Trillion Trees Pledge and statewide reforestation efforts. 
Led by a Wisconsin DNR forester, stewards will walk the forest trails and designated off-trail areas to hand-collect acorns that have fallen to the forest floor. Along the way we’ll discuss dedicated oak regeneration efforts at the FEC and other climate-smart adaptive strategies.
The Department of Natural Resources <a target="_blank" href="https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/TreePlanting" rel="nofollow noopener">reforestation program</a> grows high-quality native tree seedlings and shrubs to plant on private and public lands for conservation and to contribute to the forest products industry.

Acorn Collecting Workshop at the Forest Exploration Center

Come take a walk among the brilliant fall colors at the Forest Exploration Center. We’ll explore and photograph the hidden world of the forest in autumn, looking for the unique shapes, colors, and textures of the season. We'll search for signs of life among the falling leaves, tucked into tree cavities, and practice some tree and fungi identification. These tiny details can open up a whole world of forest life, and make for some very interesting photo subjects as well.With master naturalist Danielle Pahlisch of Milwaukee County Parks and Kimberly Mackowski of TheParkNextDoor.Registration is free, but required. As southeastern Wisconsin faces more extreme weather and flooding events, both natural and manmade infrastructure systems are crucial for keeping our communities safe. Join Cheryl Nenn of Milwaukee Riverkeeper to learn about the forest as infrastructure. How does the FEC help absorb and filter rainwater and stabilize the surrounding landscape? How do urban trees and woodlands protect our waterways? During this guided hike along the forest trail, we'll discuss and discover the benefits of trees in a time of climate change, from their root systems to the canopy above.Registration is free, but required. Countdown is on for Beginning of North Shore School for Seniors
Back-to-school also is for the young at heart! Registration is ongoing for the North Shore School for Seniors (NSSS) fall session, with some classes starting Sept.14. Classes meet at United Methodist Church of Whitefish Bay (UMCWFB), 819 E. Silver Spring Dr., during the day on Monday or Tuesday.
Exciting new classes that center on history and social justice include “The Quest for Cool, Clear Water.” Explore some surprising blindspots among well-intentioned engineers who try to assist indigenous people in their quest for that water. With “Shaken and Stirred: Alcohol, Public Health and Society,” examines the societal costs of excessive drinking and the implications of current alcohol policies – especially in Wisconsin. Questions, ideas and reflections welcomed!
Or, consider a memoir writing class that will help guide the way to sharing (and preserving) stories with children and grandchildren. This is a great way to get started and stop procrastinating! With “Korean Paper Art,” learn how to make unique holiday ornaments or holiday gifts.
Other new offerings are “Apps: Hidden Gems for Your Smartphone,” “Golden Age of Pirates,” “Filming Authenticity,” “The Beatles at Shea Stadium,” “Beyond Bodice Rippers: Romance Novels Today,” and “The Smothers Brothers.”

The 2026 fall session (Term 1) begins Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 14 &amp; 15, through Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 5 &amp; 6. Term 2 begins Monday and Tuesday, Oct, 19 &amp; 20, through Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 9 &amp; 10. There are no classes Oct. 12 &amp; 13. Fees are $10 per class meeting.
