The Substation

Ensemble Companio announces its milestone anniversary concert, Long Time Trav’ling, on Saturday, May 16 at 3:00 PM EDT at the Substation in Boston, Masachusetts. The program marks fifteen seasons of passionate choral artistry, bringing together the ensemble’s most beloved works in a single heartfelt and uplifting celebration.
About the Concert
Featuring Ensemble Companio’s favorite repertoire from the past fifteen years, Long Time Trav’ling speaks to the constancy of change, of kinship that transcends distance, and of loving commitment to possibility—and to each other—against all odds. The program weaves together unaccompanied choral gems spanning the full arc of the organization’s history, creating an evening that is at once a retrospective and a testament to the enduring power of communal song.
Highlights of the program include Adolphus Hailstork’s Seven Songs of the Rubaiyat, Carlos Cordero’s Garden, Founding Artistic Director Joseph Gregorio’s sublime Maid of Culmore, and American traditional favorites drawn from The Sacred Harp, among other choral gems from throughout the ensemble’s history.
About the Venue
The Substation was built in 1911 as a part of a city-wide network that powered the trolley system of Boston Elevated Railway (BERy), the predecessor to the MBTA. The Substation was decommissioned in 1971 and lay boarded up and vacant for nearly 50 years. After extensive renovations, the Substation today is over 3,000 square feet with soaring 34-foot high ceilings, stunning windows, glazed concrete floors, and original elements of the building including a steel gantry crane.

About Ensemble Companio
Now in its fifteenth season, Ensemble Companio is an all-volunteer chamber choir dedicated to building community through passionate performances of the finest choral music. Known for adventurous programming, vibrant concert experiences, and frequent collaborations with school, community, and collegiate ensembles, Ensemble Companio actively features works from underrepresented composers, rarely performed masterworks, and choral gems of all genres.
Under the direction of Artistic Director Dr. Erik Peregrine, Ensemble Companio has received multiple national awards, including the American Prize in Choral Performance and consecutive Ernst Bacon Memorial Awards.

The eclectic lineup of bands—all led by Roslindale residents—includes AS3, Clear Audience, David Leach Collective, Bill Pierce Quartet, Manuel Kauffmann’s Manduca Sexta, Man On Land, and TickleJuice. &nbsp; &nbsp; Curated by jazz pianist/composer, Roslindale's Brian Friedland, the event highlights world-class musicians with deep ties to Boston’s vibrant jazz scene and leading institutions including Berklee College of Music and New England Conservatory. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Bring a chair for Adams Park and enjoy great music in the heart of the neighborhood.

The Center for the Arts in Natick

Hailing from the city of Boston, Alternative Pop artist Jodi Heights stands out in the sea of singer-songwriters with her classically honed technique and her poetic prowess. She holds multiple degrees in music, including a Master of Music from the New England Conservatory.
This release concert celebrates Jodi’s night-themed album, Nocturne, her first Grammy-submitted project.
“I’ve always been a night owl, so writing and recording a whole project centered around loving the dark seemed natural to me. I hope people will receive ‘Nocturne’ as a lullaby to their weary hearts. Turn off all the lights. Maybe burn a few candles, and listen to the whole album at night. Come find your way in the dark.” – Jodi Heights
Nocturne is Jodi’s 6th recording project and marks her second project with Grammy-nominated engineer John Weston of Futura Productions (Roslindale, MA). The album is available in Dolby Atmos, a spatial audio technology for immersive sound.

The Improbable Beasts bass clarinet ensemble, with special guests Meryl Summers(bassoon) and Solon Gordon (piano) present “We Rise,” a program of music about coming together in the midst of adversity, and rising up in community.
Beasts director Jonathan Russell will be joined by pianist Solon Gordon and bassoonist Meryl Summers in his compositional response to the dislocations and disruptions of our current moment called “We Reflect, We Grieve, We Rise.” 
After this, the Beasts present two more of Russell’s original compositions and close with a rousing rendition of the African American Spiritual and protest song “Down by the Riverside.” 
Come join the Beasts for a memorable afternoon of moving and rousing music.
