Dr. James Ron, Ph.D., is a distinguished researcher based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, whose life journey has been characterized by a relentless pursuit of human rights, social science, and advocacy. Born in the United States, he embarked on a unique path that has taken him across borders and continents.

His early years were marked by diversity, having lived in France before settling in Israel at the age of nine. The formative years of his life were spent in the vibrant city of Jerusalem, a place that would shape his future endeavors.

His academic journey commenced at Hebrew University, but it reached its zenith at Stanford University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science. During his studies, he was drawn to the transformative power of journalism, and he spent his semesters working with the Jerusalem bureau of the Associated Press. This experience immersed him in the complex events unfolding in Israel and Palestine, particularly during the first Palestinian uprising against Israeli military rule. Witnessing the violations of Palestinian rights fueled his growing concern.

Motivated by a deep sense of purpose, James volunteered as an English-language editor for B'Tselem – The Israeli Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories. His dedication played a pivotal role in the group's groundbreaking investigation into Israeli ill-treatment and torture of Palestinian suspects.

The profound impact of his work in journalism and human rights advocacy led him to collaborate with Human Rights Watch, a non-governmental organization headquartered in the United States. In this role, he meticulously investigated various Israeli military policies in the Palestinian territories, resulting in the authorship of two comprehensive reports on violations of international human rights and humanitarian law.

Inspired by his experiences, James Ron embarked on a Ph.D. in sociology at the University of California, Berkeley. His research focus centered on unraveling the intricate causes and consequences of nationalism and political violence. Although he delved into conflicts in diverse regions, his primary focus remained on the Israeli-Palestinian situation. He completed his doctorate with a dissertation comparing Israeli and Serbian nationalism, later published as a book by California University Press.
