Hudson River Maritime Museum

Join filmmakers Gary Bohan Jr. and Stephen Blauweiss for an entertaining multimedia presentation that will include several completed segments from their feature documentary Sharkey &amp; His Pals. Sharkey was a sea lion with a sense of humor so uncanny and spontaneous, many considered him practically human. Trained in Kingston at a unique facility called Seal College, Sharkey starred on Broadway and worked with many entertainers and celebrities. His success resulted from the bond between him and his loving trainer, whose secret was showering Sharkey with kindness. This presentation will offer many surprises and laughs along with lots of show business history.

The&nbsp;position&nbsp;of&nbsp;Lighthouse&nbsp;Keeper&nbsp;is&nbsp;an&nbsp;antiquated&nbsp;job.&nbsp;It&nbsp;calls&nbsp;to&nbsp;mind&nbsp;loneliness,&nbsp;isolation,&nbsp;and&nbsp;in&nbsp;rare&nbsp;cases,&nbsp;even&nbsp;madness.&nbsp;But&nbsp;at&nbsp;this&nbsp;lecture&nbsp;and&nbsp;performance,&nbsp;you&nbsp;will&nbsp;learn&nbsp;what&nbsp;it&nbsp;was&nbsp;really&nbsp;like&nbsp;to&nbsp;be&nbsp;a&nbsp;lighthouse&nbsp;keeper.&nbsp;You’ll&nbsp;meet&nbsp;the&nbsp;Murdocks,&nbsp;a&nbsp;family&nbsp;that&nbsp;kept&nbsp;the&nbsp;Rondout&nbsp;Light&nbsp;for&nbsp;generations.&nbsp;Then,&nbsp;be&nbsp;transported&nbsp;to&nbsp;Kingston&nbsp;in&nbsp;1884&nbsp;as&nbsp;the&nbsp;Murdocks&nbsp;receive&nbsp;surprise&nbsp;visitors&nbsp;in&nbsp;the&nbsp;midst&nbsp;of&nbsp;preparing&nbsp;for&nbsp;a&nbsp;storm.&nbsp;This&nbsp;experience&nbsp;will&nbsp;include&nbsp;a&nbsp;short&nbsp;lecture&nbsp;as&nbsp;well&nbsp;as&nbsp;a&nbsp;full&nbsp;length&nbsp;play.

Join us this summer for an exciting, new, all-day youth program combining the considerable strengths and history of the Hudson River Maritime Museum, now in its 47th year! The HRMM Voyager Program offers a truly unique, multi-activity, hands-on opportunity for young participants.&nbsp;Open to all skill levels, our&nbsp;<a href="https://hrmm.app.neoncrm.com/event.jsp?event=9590&amp;" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Seafarers</a>&nbsp;(9-12 years old) and Navigators (13-17 years old) will spend each day sailing for three hours, practicing boat building and woodworking for 90 minutes, and participating in other STEAM activities involving history, crafts, games, and tours on our solar tour boat&nbsp;Solaris, all while fostering learning, friendship, and adventure. Seafarers and Navigators will come together for a mid-day lunch onshore.&nbsp;The program is led by professional woodworkers, museum educators, and US Sailing Certified Instructors who help participants explore how STEAM principles apply in the woodshop and on the water. Classes are held rain or shine each day they are scheduled. We sail in light rain, but if thunderstorms threaten we stay ashore and do other activities.
