Hudson River Maritime Museum

Of the dozens of lighthouses and warning lights that once dotted the Hudson River, only seven remain. This iconic American river was a transportation super highway long before automobiles were invented, and enabled the rise of New York City and westward expansion into the interior of this country. Throughout almost two centuries of America's explosive growth, these lighthouses kept watch, guarding the safety of the Hudson’s waterborne traffic.
Commissioned and produced by HRMM, and directed, filmed and edited by Jeff Mertz of Moonbow Imaging, "Seven Sentinels" explores the history of the Hudson River’s seven remaining lighthouses and the keepers that lived in them, as told by the people interpreting and caring for the structures today. ​ The Hudson River Maritime Museum's concept for this film grew out of decades of Hudson River lighthouse interpretation, including research, exhibits, articles, short films and presentations. The film places the lighthouses in historic context, tells the fascinating stories of the buildings themselves and their keepers, and outlines how these seven have survived to the present day, and how to preserve them for generations to come.
This screening will take place in our Homeport Barn.

Join Music Lady extraordinaire Emily Music for Kids for an hour long rollicking musical celebration of our beautiful, historic Hudson River. Sing, celebrate, and dance along to songs about sailing, paddling, the many boats that travel up and down the Hudson, crawdads, and fishing. And sing along to music by Hudson River hero, Pete Seeger, too!
Emily Music for Kids is Emily Ellison, a Master Degree Teacher and award winning children’s music lady with over 20 years creating fun filled, interactive, hands-on music, visual arts, history and science programs for people of all ages, cultures and abilities all over New York City, and beyond.
Emily has enjoyed educating delighted repeat audiences at Queens Public and NY public Libraries, MoMa PS1, Sundog Theatre, Inc, City of Beacon Recreation Department, Mid-Hudson Early Education Center, Hudson Sloop Clearwater, Mid-Hudson Discovery Museum, The Armory Unity Center, The Staten Island Children's Museum, and the St. Francis De Sales School for the Deaf in Brooklyn and more, in English, Spanish, and beginning American Sign Language. &nbsp;She even sang with Dr. Patch Adams as “Melodita” the clown!

This hands-on after-school class teaches youths age 13 to 18 the fundamentals of building with wood, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 4:15-5:45 PM, for six weeks, under the guidance of multitalented woodworker and boat builder Max Smith.The first two weeks cover safety, power tool and hand tool use, and students will get their hands dirty practicing with a wide variety of tools to measure, cut, and shape wood.During the remaining four weeks, students will work on a variety of small projects that they can take home at the end of the course, whether a stool or lidded box with dovetail joints.These projects build skills in project planning, layout and design, measurement, fabrication, and assembly, and are a solid foundation for STEAM-based learning. This class offers applied learning for both college degree track students and vocational students, whether they'll go on to study architecture or engineering, or to start a career as a general contractor or furniture maker.As time permits, students can also stretch their creative muscles by adding decorative elements and finishes to their projects.Scholarships are available for this class, to cover 25%, 50% or 100% of tuition. Come to the Homeport Barn for this special screening of "The Keeper"! This screening will feature a talk with Jon Bowermaster and special guest John Lipscomb.
Like many rivers around the world – the Hudson, America's First River and the Birthplace of the American Environmental Movement – boomed as a growing human population used it for transportation, sustenance and, for many years, a dumping ground. The river paid a price for all this use and abuse, struggling against its share of contamination. For the past nearly three decades the river's poet laureate and literal "eyes on the river," Captain John, has been at the forefront of each of those fights, taking on industrial and human pollution, suffering the losses and celebrating victories.
While he has had successes on the Hudson, committing a life to protecting a river is a never-ending fight. Today, John Lipscomb is one of more than 300 “Keepers” around the globe, looking out for their respective rivers.

Jay Heritage Center

The Jay Heritage Center (JHC) is proud to welcome educators and the general public to our site during September 2026, Constitution Month, to commemorate our nation’s journey towards independence and democracy. The free program is co-sponsored by the Mid-Hudson Social Studies Council. The event will be the first of many lively conversation about America at 250 with some of our country’s leading history scholars. It is open to teachers throughout the Mid Hudson and Sound Shore communities as well as Fairfield County.
Professors David Blight, Frank Cogliano, Joanne Freeman and Beverly Gage will take the stage at the new Wachenheim Center to examine the history of the nation-state and the contested nature of American national identity. The panel will discuss what the United States and the Constitution have meant to citizens over time and how that vision has changed or stayed constant. &nbsp;The event is FREE but registration is required.
