Artisans Way

In conjunction with their 15th anniversary, Artisans Way in Concord Center will be hosting Diane Whitman of Sandia East over the weekend of Sept 26-27 for a show and sale of Native American Jewelry and Craft. Through her more than 35 years in the Native American jewelry business, Whitman has established relationships with artisans from various tribes and pueblos in New Mexico. She travels to the Southwest several times a year to hand-select hundreds of pieces of jewelry, accessories, and pottery and has been the exclusive source of Native American craft for Artisans Way since their opening in Concord in 2011.
On Saturday, September 26 and Sunday, September 27, Whitman will be displaying solid sterling silver jewelry pieces (bracelets, earrings, pendants, rings, etc.) made in the tradition of the Navajo Nation as well as beaded necklaces designed by the natives of the Santo Domingo Pueblo. In addition, there will be silver pieces incorporating set stones and inlays created by Zuni tribe members and a broad collection of their hand-carved animal fetishes (small stone figures, said to house a spirit which can give assistance to the owner that have been used by southwestern Native Americans since prehistoric times.) Examples of both traditional and contemporary styles are sure to appeal to all appreciators of Native American crafted jewelry.
Alongside jewelry and fetishes, Whitman will also be featuring a collection of individually selected ceramic pieces created by both Navajo and Acoma Pueblo tribe members. The ceramic artists employ a variety of techniques, including etching and coloring on traditional “horsehair” and black-and-white pottery.
 Artisans Way is both honored and excited to be representing and promoting the exceptional work of the Native American people. A collection this extensive, of unmatched quality and variety, is rarely found outside of Native American territory. The public is invited to this free event from 10am – 6pm on Saturday and 12pm – 5pm on Sunday. During the show, all Native American jewelry and craft purchases will be discounted 10%. Artisans Way in Concord center welcomes artists Victoria and Lawrence Elbroch on Saturday, October 18 from 12-5pm.Their show, “Under the Branches,” includes both Victoria’s printmaking and drawing, and Lawrence’s photography. They attribute their collaborative work to their loving relationship and a shared inspiration. Reveling in their different ways of seeing ancient trees, Victoria works in a sketchbook plein air and Lawrence takes photographs from the same angle. The two forms of a single image are then expertly blended to arrive at one unique, composite view of their individual interpretations. These are the pieces that are especially featured in the “Under the Branches” collection debuting at Artisans Way.
Born in England, Victoria emigrated to America in 1973. She studied printmaking at the University of Oklahoma, spending three years working with master printmaker, Loraine Moore. She specializes in mixed media drawing with ink and collage and two printmaking mediums, monotype, and photopolymer etching. She has won numerous awards for her prints and drawings and was awarded the 2019 Piscataqua Artist’s Advancement Grant.Since receiving the grant, she has spent time in the UK drawing meticulously researched ancient trees. She is a member of Zea Mays Printmaking Studio, The Boston Printmakers, and The League of New Hampshire Craftsmen.
Lawrence Elbroch, born in New York City, is self-taught photographer with strong technical skills. His interest in texture, shadow and light has carried over into the printmaking medium. Lawrence’s work has been published in Artscope Magazine (March/April 2023) and Photographer's Forum Magazine annual “Best of Photography” edition multiple times. He has received awards for his work including a commendation from the Sony World Photography Awards.
In addition to the UK, Lawrence and Victoria have traveled extensively to places including India, Tibet, and Nepal. These travels have led to more collaborative works where her drawings are meshed seamlessly into his photographs. 
To the Elbrochs, trees hold profound significance. The strange, gnarly bark and peculiar anatomy of ancient trees fire their imaginations and Victoria and Lawrence draw parallels between the trees and all they hold dear—wisdom, family, connections, shelter, and resilience. They hope that their work, beyond being beautiful, serves as a reminder of the crucial role trees play in the increasingly warming planet and that people will be intrigued enough to see trees and the natural world as their fellow inhabitants.

On Sunday, September 20th, Sudbury will host our third inaugural <a href="https://kids.pmc.org/sudbury" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Sudbury PMC Kids Bike Ride</a>.&nbsp;Our ride is a 1-mile loop that riders may enjoy as long as they would like. The one mile course is entirely paved and loops through the beautiful residential neighborhoods of historic Sudbury. Parents are welcome to ride with their children but it is not required. If a parent chooses to accompany their child on the bike, we ask that they register as volunteers.&nbsp;
Many kids choose to ride the loop 3-6-12 or even 15 times. We encourage riders to participate as long as they would like. We will have special badges for riders who accomplish 5-8-12 and 15 miles, too! Please indicate at registration an estimate of your rider's total distance (this will help us for event organization).&nbsp;There is also an enclosed parking lot loop all starting from Curtis Middle School in Sudbury, MA. (Adults may opt to register as volunteers if they would like to ride with the kids). Before the ride there will be music and bike decorating; during the ride and following there will be an Ice-Cream Truck, Food Truck, Coffee Truck, huge bouncy castle, lawn games, music and more. All registered riders will get a free ice cream from our friends at Trombetta’s Farm Ice Cream. Registration takes place from 8:30am-9:45am. The ride is from 10:00am-11:30am, and food and games will be available from 10:00am - 1:00pm.
“The Pan-Mass Challenge is a Massachusetts-based bike-a-thon that raises more money for charity than any other single athletic fundraising event in the country. Always held the first weekend in August, the PMC raises funds for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a world leader in adult and pediatric cancer treatment and research. Each summer, thousands of riders and volunteers from 43 states and 12 countries participate in the PMC, all with a common goal: to find a cure for cancer.
100 percent of all rider-raised funds go directly to cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund. The PMC is Dana-Farber’s single largest supporter and is 62 percent of the Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue. Since 1980, the PMC has raised $972 million for Dana-Farber.”
The Sudbury PMC Kids Bike Ride empowers young participants to contribute to a meaningful cause while enjoying a fun activity. By offering multiple course options, every child will have the opportunity to participate and make a difference - regardless of age or ability. Each ride distance is carefully planned to be safe and enjoyable, with designated routes through historic Sudbury neighborhoods that are well-marked and closely monitored by volunteers. For the youngest participants, the tot lot loop provides a secure environment where kids can ride in a contained area - strollers, scooters, tricycles are ALL welcome!
Beyond the joy of bike riding, the Sudbury PMC Kids Bike Ride serves as a powerful educational experience for children, teaching them about the impact of collective efforts in fighting cancer. As they pedal for a purpose, they learn about empathy, community involvement, and the importance of supporting breakthroughs in treatment and cures at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. This event not only raises crucial funds for cancer research but also instills valuable life lessons in the young riders; collectively we all pedal towards a more cancer-free future. As with all PMC rides, every penny donated goes directly to cancer treatment and research at Dana-Farber.
