In 2011, O'Rourke retired from the New Jersey State Police with 26 years of law enforcement and investigative experience, having conducted hundreds of investigations ranging from misdemeanors to murder. His tenure with the elite organization afforded him the opportunity to patrol New Jersey from the country roads of rural Sussex County to the city streets of such heavily populated urban centers as Newark, Elizabeth, and Paterson.

O'Rourke's investigative work resulted in more than 300 successful criminal convictions.

Since leaving the force he has written and published four nonfiction books while working full-time as a private investigator.

O'Rourke is also considered a security expert with experience in emergency preparedness and response. In that capacity, he has provided security consulting services to global corporations and some of the most prestigious residential buildings in the northeastern U.S.

His four books for The History Press (see below) remain in active circulation.
