Roosevelt Island Visual Arts Association (RIVAA)

Opening reception for the exhibition&nbsp;Mostly Blues&nbsp;that brings together a selection of drawings, fine arts prints, paintings, artist’s books, and works from handmade paper created by <a href="https://www.katerinakyselica.com" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Katerina Kyselica</a> whose art embraces structure, chance, and subtle imperfection. The show features artworks that explore the inner state of one’s mind, revealing Kyselica’s playful approach to creating imagery and affinity for a written word.The exhibition is on view September 24 – October 18.

Demonstrating Kyselica’s range of material experimentation, Mostly Blues presents mainly works on paper, the artist’s favorite material, including Twittering Machine – a series of large-scale drawings on the traditional Japanese Sekishu paper; and Tsunami – a series created by using the process of hand papermaking, done in collaboration with the organization Dieu Donné in Brooklyn.

“I really like the tactile quality of paper, whether I use it as a support in drawing or painting or as a structural material in book arts. I carefully choose the paper I use for each project, for there are so many varieties of textures to work with. I’m also drawn to the sound paper makes, both in drawing, where I enjoy it as I mark the paper, and in book arts where I use the acoustic quality of paper to create sensory experience for viewers as they explore my handmade books.”

<a target="_blank" href="https://www.rivaagallery.org/katerina-kyselica" rel="nofollow noopener">Katerina Kyselica</a> is a visual artist, designer, and curator. She received a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University, School of the Arts in Virginia and a Master’s Degree from Charles University in Prague, the Czech Republic. Her works, including fine art prints, drawings, mixed media works, and artist’s books – have been exhibited in solo and group shows at galleries in Europe and the US, including the Print Center New York, Christie’s New York, Manhattan Graphics Center, BBLA Gallery, and Center for Contemporary Printmaking. She has organized and curated a number of exhibitions, such as Celebrating Print and Forgetting Remembering – surveys of contemporary printmaking and book arts. Her articles on visual art, printmaking, and design have appeared in numerous outlets. She published and served as managing editor of the international art magazine Celebrating Print.

Our FREE YMCA Caring for Caregivers support group program is now entering its second year, and we are looking forward to seeing new and returning members in our meetings at the Long Island City YMCA and for other in-person and online events this year.
In our program, the focus is on the caregivers.
Caregivers often give up a lot in their own lives, while caring for others. Many caregivers feel strong emotions due to caregiving pressures. 
We support you to take care of yourself better AND get more assistance in your caregiving role from state, city, and community resources.
Then you can feel better about your caregiving, minimize burnout, and feel more fulfilled in your own life.
