Kathy Afzali, Neighbor
- North Potomac-Darnestown, MD
Former Frederick News Post columnist, mother of two daughters, and Frederick County businesswoman, Kathy Afzali is a Maryland State Delegate representing Frederick County. A Republican, Kathy is a dynamic community leader and businesswoman with 30+ years in private sector and non-profit work.
Kathy is unapologetically conservative. She believes in free markets, small manageable government, and the power of the individual. As a Freshman Delegate in Annapolis, Kathy was a key leader in the petition drive to stop SB 167, a bill that would have required state colleges to give In-State Tuition for illegal aliens.
By the end of Delegate Afzali’s first legislative session in Annapolis, she sponsored or co-sponsored forty-nine bills, one of which was a bill that required a photo ID when voting in the state of Maryland, as well as introducing a Farm Estate Tax bill which would be the first step in eliminating the high inheritance taxes paid by farmers, family businesses, and individual citizens.
Kathy’s leadership on agricultural issues has catapulted her to be the “go to” person for Maryland agriculture. In addition she has received a 100% rating from Maryland Business for Responsive Government and was named by the Gazette of Business and Politics as their pick for a winner in Annapolis this past session.
Kathy’s fresh new perspective and clear thinking will make her a valuable asset to the people of Maryland 6th congressional district and the U.S. Congress.
