Visit Roaring&nbsp;Brook Nature Center to learn more about the fascinating woolly worm! According to legend, the 13 bands on the woolly worm (woolly bear caterpillar) represent the 13 weeks of winter. Brown bands indicate a mild week, black bands indicate a cold, snowy week. Drop in anytime between 10 am and 4pm to head out on the trails for a self-guided scavenger hunt to learn more about our wildlife winter weather prognosticators.
Event is free with admission to the Nature Center.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Join award winning author and photographer Joan Kantor at Roaring Brook Nature Center for a celebration of the natural world through evocative words and original photography. Featuring selections from The Magic of Moments and her new book, Whispering Words Over Water, the presentation explores the beauty, movement, and quiet discoveries found in nature.
The event also celebrates the launch of Whispering Words Over Water and includes an accompanying exhibit pairing Joan’s original photographs with her written work.
Free Admission. No Registration Necessary.&nbsp;

On Saturday Sept 19th Johnny Sixgun Band, Night Shift, and Michael Nigretti take over the stage plus a show-stopping performances from the dance troupe Sorelle D’ Italia in America. And they’re back by popular demand — the Yummy Meatball Eating Contest, the Great Grape Stomping Contest, and the one-and-only Cheese Roll Contest! Enjoy our Taste of Italy and Beer, Wine, Italian Specialty Cocktails. Bring the kids, all are welcome. Shuttle Bus Information: Parking is at an offsite location, at Residence Inn back parking lot Ensign Drive Avon. Sorry no pets allowed at this event.

Build your own scarecrow at this fun community event! Scarecrow Day is an annual fall tradition at the Simsbury Historical Society. Join us on the front lawn. Pick out your scarecrow frame, dress it, stuff it with straw, and make it uniquely yours with our provided materials. 
The event takes place from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Raindate is Sunday, September 20.&nbsp; Cost is $20 per scarecrow. Cash or credit. No advance registration required. Scarecrow Day 2026&nbsp;is sponsored by The Ethel Walker School. The Jay Heritage Center in Rye, New York will celebrate America at 250 with a toast to Jay Medal honorees Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annette Gordon-Reed, the Carl M. Loeb University Professor at Harvard University and award-winning Lincoln historian Harold Holzer.
The Jay Medal for Service was created in 2012 to recognize individuals who demonstrate a selfless spirit of commitment to and engagement with their community mirroring the multifaceted contributions of John Jay and his descendants. These honorees have demonstrated through their life's work that our shared narratives as a country, complicated as they are, can be better illuminated through the highest caliber of ongoing scholarship and advocacy. Honorees are selected for their excellence in the fields of American history, environmental stewardship, social justice or civic engagement.
Joining the celebration will be Chief Judge of the State of New York and the New York Court of Appeals, Honorable Rowan D. Wilson and historian and philanthropist Elihu Rose who will present the awards at JHC's annual Soirée. Special guests will include David Blight, Frank Cogliano, Joanne Freeman, and Beverly Gage.

The Jay Medal Soirée will be held Saturday, September 19, 2026 at the Jay Estate from 5:30-9:30pm. Cocktails, dinner, award ceremony and dancing. Cocktail Attire.
