Marion E. Wade Center

The Wheaton Center for Faith, Politics & Economics at Wheaton College presents "Ben Han Memorial Lecture: Korean Messiah," a lecture by Jonathan Cheng on Monday, October 12, 2026 at 7:00 PM.
For the past half century, Christianity has flourished in South Korea as it has in few other places. But a hundred years ago, no city in Asia was more Christian than Pyongyang, today the capital of nuclear-armed North Korea. In a city so thoroughly Christianized it was known as "the Jerusalem of the East," some of the very first—and most fervent—converts to the faith included the family of Kim Jong Un. Jonathan Cheng, the Wall Street Journal's China bureau chief and former Korea bureau chief, traces this remarkable history, from the central role of American Presbyterian missionaries in bringing Pyongyang to the faith to its transformation under North Korean state founder and one-time Sunday school teacher and church organist Kim Il Sung.
Jonathan Cheng is the China bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal, overseeing coverage of the world’s second-largest economy across politics, economics, business, technology, and society. Jonathan leads a team of two dozen correspondents and researchers in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taipei, Singapore, and New York, with responsibility for the Chinese mainland and Taiwan.Previously, Jonathan was the Korea bureau chief for The Journal, running coverage of North Korea and South Korean politics and business. He began his career as an intern in The Journal’s Hong Kong bureau and also worked as a markets reporter in the Journal’s New York office.Jonathan speaks English, Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese, French, and Korean. A native of Toronto, Jonathan graduated from Princeton University with a degree in history. He lives in Beijing and has traveled to North Korea twice.
This event is free and open to the public and will take place in Marion E. Wade Center, Room 130 Bakke Auditorium, located at 351 East Lincoln Avenue in Wheaton on the Northwest corner of campus at the intersection of Washington Street and Lincoln Avenue. The Wheaton College Department of Philosophy presents the 2026-27 McManis Lecture, “What May AI Hope for?” by Dr. Antón Barba-Kay, on Tuesday, October 13 at 7:30 PM.
Barba-Kay writes: "Most everyone seems to agree with the view that AI development should align with human needs—that it should serve us and not the other way around and that it can help us achieve some higher human potential. Unfortunately, no one seems to have any clear idea of how this would be possible and what this would entail. I want to discuss the intrinsic difficulty of this question as well as the question of what makes AI and other digital technologies so difficult to bring into focus. I then mean to convince you that some of our stock ways of approaching these technologies are wrongheaded; they are by turns transhumanist and dehumanizing. I'll conclude by offering a couple of alternative suggestions for the progress of AI, such as might yield a better (if qualified) vision of what we may hope for from it."
Dr. Antón Barba-Kay is Distinguished Fellow at the Center on Privacy & Technology at Georgetown Law School. He was formerly an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Catholic University and Robert Aird Chair of Humanities at Deep Springs College. In addition to his scholarly publications in nineteenth-century German philosophy, his essays about culture and technology have appeared in The New Republic, The Hedgehog Review, and The Point, among other magazines. A Web of Our Own Making – his book about what the internet is and what a difference it makes – was published in 2023 by Cambridge University Press. He earned B.A.’s at St. John’s College and the University of Cambridge, as well as a Ph.D. from the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago.
This event is free and open to the public and will take place in Barrows Auditorium in Billy Graham Hall, located at 500 College Avenue in Wheaton. For more information, contact Amy Park at 630.752.5040 or philosophy@wheaton.edu.

The E. Beatrice Batson Shakespeare Society at Wheaton College presents "On the Christian Uses of King Lear," a lecture by Richard Gibson on Thursday, October 29, 2026 at 7:00 PM. King Lear has long been viewed as theologically problematic and has even been accused of being an irreligious play. Drawing on the works of George MacDonald, Leo Tolstoy, W.H. Auden, Frederick Buechner, and Wendell Berry, this talk will reveal how particular episodes from Lear have fueled meditations on grace, compassion, and the power of moments of divine absence. Camerata Chicago, led by the chamber orchestra's founder and music director Drostan Hall, opens its 23rd concert season with a program featuring Felix Mendelssohn’s music for William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Op. 61; Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for Four Winds in E-flat Major, K. 297b; and the world premiere of Chicago-area composer Tony Payne’s “Fantasy on English Melodies,” commissioned by Camerata Chicago. All three are new to Camerata Chicago’s repertoire.
Mendelssohn’s music for Shakespeare’s romantic comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Opus 61, comprises the overture Mendelssohn wrote as teenager and the incidental music he composed nearly two decades later.
The work includes the resplendent “Wedding March,” one of the most famous pieces of classical music, traditionally heard at the conclusion of the ceremony as the newlywed couple walks out in joyous celebration.
Hall, who was born in Norwich, England, and retains his “plummy” British accent, will narrate excerpts from the play, set in an enchanted forest, as well as conduct Mendelssohn’s witty and colorful, atmospheric score conjuring bird songs, buzzing insects, rustling leaves, and rippling creeks.
Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for Four Winds in E-flat major, K. 297b, is a charming and melodious three-movement orchestral work. The soloists are four of Camerata Chicago’s principal players: Grace Hong, oboe; Elizandro Garcia Montoya, clarinet; Vincent Karamanov, bassoon; and Lee Shirer, horn.
“We are thrilled to feature our superb principal wind players for the first time with the programming of this marvelous concerto,” Hall says.
“Audiences who are used to hearing the Mendelssohn and Mozart played by a symphony orchestra can savor these more intimately scaled performances for the musical detail they reveal,” Hall says.
“Both are examples of works that were originally written for orchestras the size of Camerata Chicago,” he says, “as were many other important works in the classical repertoire we feature.”
Camerata Chicago, Hall says, “is about chamber-music intimacy on a larger stage.”
Hall describes Payne’s ““Fantasy on English Melodies” as “beautifully cast in the mold of Ralph Vaughan Williams, who turned English folk tunes into wonderful, spiritually uplifting compositions.”
The “Fantasy,” which Payne dedicated to Hall, includes the folk ballad “Lovely Joan,” a tribute to Hall’s late mother, Joan.
