Tuesdays from 7:00pm-9:00pmJune 23 - July 28, 2026 (6 weeks)<a href="https://learn.slc.edu/courses/lifelong-learning-rooms-remembered" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">learn.slc.edu/courses/lifelong-learning-rooms-remembered</a>This 6-week painting course explores how memory can shape our depiction of interior spaces.You will develop paintings based on a personally meaningful place, (a childhood home, a former kitchen, classroom, or another remembered interior) using a combination of memory, written descriptions, and inspired reference images.
Emphasis will be placed on translating sensory memory into color, light, and spatial composition. Through a process that includes drawing exercises, image gathering, color studies, and multiple painting iterations, participants will create a series of works on canvas paper. Alongside studio practice, students will engage with weekly readings or interviews featuring artists who work from a combination of memory and reference imagery.
This course will include: short demonstrations on painting techniques, guided drawing and painting exercises, individual feedback during studio time, Group discussions and informal critiques. The instructor will also assign one piece of material (i.e. Artists Interview Podcast Episode, Video, Short Reading) as weekly homework.
Some artists you will discuss (browse books from, listen to interviews with) are: Salman Toor, Luc Tuymans, Milton Avery, Mamma Anderson, Howard Hodgkin.
Student Expectations:
<ul><li>Bring personal reference materials (photographs, sketches, written memories, found images).</li><li>Complete weekly assignments (reading, watching videos, writing, or image collection).</li><li>Engage in group critiques with openness and respect.</li></ul>

Participants will need watch the films in advance.Access to movies is not provided. Please refer to Amazon Prime or a streaming service.The first half of each session will involve the presentation of historical and other contexts; the second half will be a discussion.
One dimension of class will explore how the treatment of a particular moment of history reflects the moment of its creation no less than the events it portrays.

American History on Film: Fact, Fiction, Memory (Summer 2026)

Thursdays from 9:00am-11:00amJune 25 to July 30, 2026 (6 weeks)<a href="https://learn.slc.edu/courses/lifelong-learning-early-20th-century-us-womens-literature-as-history" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">learn.slc.edu/courses/lifelong-learning-early-20th-century-us-womens-literature-as-history</a>These six novels – one for every week – will introduce you not only to six remarkable women writers from the first half of the 20th century, but also to the worlds that they illustrate through a window to their time.
While reading the novels is not required, it is very much recommended. A lecture establishing the history embedded in the novels and a background look at the authors who wrote them will be followed by discussion.
At the end of each lecture, Lyde will recommend three other novels, linked to the themes of that week.We will read and consider:
Kate Chopin’s The Awakening (yes, 1899, but arguably precocious)Edith Wharton’s The House of Mirth (1905)Willa Cather’s My Antonia (1918)Nella Larsen’s two novellas Quicksand and Passing (1928, 1929)Josephine Johnson’s Now in November (1934)Carson McCuller’s The Member of the Wedding (1943)
