This “Get to Know Us” event features refreshments and jazz. Hear fall course instructors describe what inspired their upcoming sessions. Our programs are “right-sized” -- lectures, discussions, or 2-4 session mini-courses to fit your busy schedule. Curious about Persian history and how Iran became the complex nation it is today? Join Trinity College Professor Emeritus Janet Bauer for a fascinating three-session deep dive into a country positioned at the crossroads of Europe and Asia.
Behind modern borders lies a rich tapestry of ethnic traditions, religious sects (Shi’ism, Sufism, and more), and centuries of cultural transformation. Together, we’ll explore key historical turning points—from ancient heritage through the 1979 Revolution and the Iran–Iraq War. NOTE: This course focuses strictly on historical background, religion, and culture, and will not cover current event developments or active conflicts.

Experience how these seemingly disparate musical styles can come together beautifully. In this three-session mini-course, Javon Jackson will use a different lens to help you appreciate the emotional honesty and social awareness of Dylan’s music. 
Jackson, Professor of Jazz and Director of the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at the University of Hartford’s Hartt School, recently released a new album, Jackson Plays Dylan.
Jackson reinterprets Dylan’s work with rich tenor sound and a band attentive to texture and flow. He’ll trace his own evolving appreciation of Dylan, plus play excerpts, along with The Hartt School’s jazz pianist Matt DeChamplain.

The Jay Heritage Center in Rye, New York will celebrate America at 250 with a toast to Jay Medal honorees Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annette Gordon-Reed, the Carl M. Loeb University Professor at Harvard University and award-winning Lincoln historian Harold Holzer.
The Jay Medal for Service was created in 2012 to recognize individuals who demonstrate a selfless spirit of commitment to and engagement with their community mirroring the multifaceted contributions of John Jay and his descendants. These honorees have demonstrated through their life's work that our shared narratives as a country, complicated as they are, can be better illuminated through the highest caliber of ongoing scholarship and advocacy. Honorees are selected for their excellence in the fields of American history, environmental stewardship, social justice or civic engagement.
Joining the celebration will be Chief Judge of the State of New York and the New York Court of Appeals, Honorable Rowan D. Wilson and historian and philanthropist Elihu Rose who will present the awards at JHC's annual Soirée. Special guests will include David Blight, Frank Cogliano, Joanne Freeman, and Beverly Gage.

The Jay Medal Soirée will be held Saturday, September 19, 2026 at the Jay Estate from 5:30-9:30pm. Cocktails, dinner, award ceremony and dancing. Cocktail Attire.
