A newly filed New Jersey Superior Court lawsuit could test whether certain firearms permit/application records may be accessible under New Jersey&rsquo;s common-law right of access, even when access under OPRA is disputed or restricted.
The case raises broader public-records and government-transparency questions involving police records, record retention, and the public interest in disclosure. The complaint seeks judicial review concerning access to records involving former Asbury Park Police Capt. David DeSane.

David DeSane pointing a firearm toward the camera inside the Asbury Park Police Department. DeSane&rsquo;s records are among those at issue in the pending public-records litigation.
