Cranford Community Center

The Rahway River Fly Tyers Group (the RRFT Group) was formed several years ago while it was associated with the Rahway River Trout Unlimited Chapter. During that time, it hosted the March Fly Tying Madness, a day during which 8-10 NJ TU chapters tied about 500 flies to donate to Project Healing Waters (for wounded veterans), Casting for Recovery (for breast cancer survivors) and the National TU Service organization. Over 2,500 flies were donated each year from 2013 thru 2020. The Group also sponsored Casting in the Park, where experienced fly fishers taught beginners how to cast a fly rod, and Fishing with a Friend, for new tyers to be shown how to fish their flies on local waters.

While the TU chapter was disbanded in 2022, the RRFT Group continues to meet twice per month at the Cranford Community Center. These meetings are under the leadership of head tyer Frank (Jake) LaMotta, joined by equally advanced tyer and fly fisher Vinnie Caffarra.

The goal of the Group is to teach fly tying to anyone interested in learning the art. We share proven techniques and fly patterns via free instruction in a relaxed and informal environment. There are no requirements to attend each meeting, and no membership or fees. Anyone under the age of 18, however, must be accompanied by an adult. Further, any requirements set forth by the Cranford Community Center (e.g., face mask protocol) must be adhered to, if necessary.

On May 26th, John Tomaszewski will explore the profound biological and philosophical bridge between the objective world and our subjective experience. He will examine how the brain doesn't merely "record" reality like a camera but rather constructs it through a complex process of predictive coding and sensory integration. By deconstructing the neural pathways that translate raw physical data into the vivid landscape of our thoughts and perceptions, we can better understand the unique mental frameworks that define our professional and personal lives. John was a long-time employee at Dun &amp; Bradstreet in computers and engineering and served as director of Marketing Information Systems. Hosted by the Borough of Kenilworth, the Boulevard will be closed to vehicle traffic from 14th St. to 23rd St. and transformed into a giant block party from 10&nbsp;am-4:00 pm. This event will feature quality exhibitors, a special crafter’s section, lots of great food, kiddie rides, a kids’ area, live music and performances, local merchants &amp; civic organizations, and a large classic car show. The car show starts on the west end of the event at 14th Street.

Steeple Concerts at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield is honored and delighted to invite the general, music-loving public to a long-awaited, live performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s masterful Great Mass in C-minor.&nbsp;&nbsp;On Sunday, May 17, at 5 PM, performed with full chorus and orchestra, this year’s Masterworks tribute to Mozart’s genius will conclude the 2025-2026 Steeple Concerts season.
St. Paul’s is located at 414 E. Broad Street (near Euclid Avenue) in Westfield, NJ.&nbsp; Tickets, priced at $40 for adults and $20 for students, may be purchased online at <a href="https://steepleconcerts.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">steepleconcerts.org</a> or on May 17 at the concert door.&nbsp; Free concert parking is available in the St. Paul’s parking lot off of Euclid Avenue or on St. Paul’s Street next to the church.&nbsp; Following the event, concert attendees are invited to a lavish reception in the church’s Hamersley Hall, where they can meet and greet concert soloists, chorus singers, and members of the professional orchestra. 
 
Mozart (1756-1791) composed his Grossemesse (K. 427) in 1782-83, age 26, when he had moved from Vienna to Salzburg.&nbsp; This move came shortly after his marriage to Maria Costanze Weber (1742-1842), the Austrian singer, businesswoman, and beloved wife who managed Mozart’s legacy after his untimely death in 1791.&nbsp; The Great Mass was possibly “written as a votive offering” to that beloved wife. (Letter to Mozart’s father, Jan 4, 1783).
Though never completed, the Great Mass is considered one of Mozart’s finest, most beautiful works. The work presents on a much grander and more ambitious scale than the 15 settings Mozart had first laid out for it. With coloratura soloist Constanze singing the Soprano 1 parts, the Mass premiered in Salzburg (1783) with only the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, and Benedictus completed.&nbsp; The Mass remains unfinished and will be performed as composed by Mozart, with additional editorial orchestration of the incomplete sections. 
 
Masterworks conductor Mark Hyczko, St. Paul’s celebrated Music Director and organist, notes that, “This Masterworks concert tribute to Mozart brings together a chorus of more than fifty voices, made up of singers from both our St. Paul’s Choir and local Westfield-area communities, together with a full orchestra of professional players, many from the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra.&nbsp; ”Mr. Hyczko adds that, “We look forward to presenting soprano Nadine Robinson, mezzo-soprano Cornelia Lotito, tenor Jeremy Blossey, and bass Charles Schneider as our distinguished Mozart Mass soloists.”
