New Providence Presbyterian Church

Our speaker will be Marty Green, a retired Materials Scientist at Bell Labs. Marty has been an avid numismatist for more than 65 years. Money is the medium of exchange that makes buying, selling, and trade possible. Before money, people relied on barter, exchanging goods and services directly—a system with significant limitations. The development of money transformed both domestic and international commerce, laying the foundation for modern economies. This presentation focuses on coins, the world's most enduring form of money, for nearly 2,700 years. Beyond their economic role, coins are historical artifacts and works of art that reflect the cultures and civilizations that produced them.

Our speaker, Jerry Soloway, has been a consultant on submarine fiberoptic systems and technology for the past dozen years.Prior to this, he spent 29 years at Bell Labs working on the development of several diverse types of communications systems and devices. Submarine fiberoptic systems are the unsung heroes of the Internet, carrying as much as 99% of transoceanic data, dwarfing the traffic carried by satellite systems. They share much technology with their terrestrial counterparts, but there are many unique challenges to developing, installing, and maintaining these systems. In addition, there are threats to these systems that the world must recognize and combat. Fiberoptic systems can also be used as acoustic/seismic sensors, offering new applications for the millions of kilometers of existing fiber.

Jerry SolowayThe Summit Area Old Guard is a social, educational, and recreational organization that serves men of retirement age. Estate planning is way too important to neglect. Do not trust non-attorneys or online services to handle your estate plan – the consequences may be dire. The choice of a lawyer is an important decision and should not be based solely upon advertisements.

GALERIA The Art Venue Quimby Street, Westfield, NJ, USA

DANCE IF YOU MUST!Warm up the evening with a special LATIN JAZZ @ GALERIA series concert event, presented by TEATRO Sí on Friday, October 9, 2026 at 7:30 pm. Join Alí Bello & his Charanga Syndicate Quintet for an exciting evening of charanga, Latin jazz, salsa and more with this talented group of musicians. Dance if you must to the sounds of acclaimed violinist Alí Bello, vocalist Fernando Pinto, pianist Coto Pincheira, bassist Abraham Saenz, and percussionist Larry Flin.
The Charanga Syndicate Quintet is a dynamic Latin jazz ensemble based in New York City that redefines tradition with a bold and modern flair. Rooted in the classic charanga format, the group infuses the elegance of traditional Cuban dance music with contemporary rhythms, improvisation, and genre-bending creativity.
The Charanga Syndicate bridges the gap between heritage and innovation. Their performances feature original compositions and inventive reinterpretations that honor the roots of Latin music while boldly pushing its boundaries into jazz, funk, and urban influences.
Driven by a mission to move tradition into a modern setting, the group brings fresh energy to the dance floor and the concert stage alike—celebrating Afro-Caribbean rhythms with a New York City edge. Whether performing in intimate clubs or major festivals, The Charanga Syndicate delivers a sound that is both timeless and forward-looking, rooted in history yet resonating with the pulse of today's Latin music scene.
Join us as this lively group of musicians take the stage at the unique GALERIA venue, located at 111 Quimby Street in downtown Westfield, NJ. Refreshments will be available for your enjoyment.

First Presbyterian Church of Metuchen

“METUCHEN EMPTY BOWLS”
Local Artist Come Together to Help Feed Those in Need
A group of artists are joining together to create an art event that will feed the soul and, literally, feed the body too.
Artists from Lore Ceramics, Earthsongs Studio, Basecamp Studio & Gallery, Rising Heart Studio and Friends of Metuchen Arts, will hold a “Metuchen Empty Bowls” fundraiser to benefit the First Presbyterian Church Community Food Pantry on Saturday, October 10, 2026 between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. in the Church’s social hall located at 270 Woodbridge Avenue in Metuchen.
The event will feature the church’s famous soup meal complete with salad, bread and desert, plus each attendee will receive a handmade ceramic bowl created especially for the event by local ceramic artists. There will be live music and an art fair with opportunity to purchase addition art to help the cause.
Organizer Robert Diken of Basecamp Studio & Gallery, a ceramic artist himself, explains:
“Empty Bowls is a grassroots movement where artists raise money for hunger-relief charities. The simple concept is: potters make bowls, restaurants donate soup, and the community shows up. As a ceramic artist, I jumped at the chance to give back through my practice, partnering with fellow artists and studios who share that spirit. For the Metuchen Empty Bowls Project, the First Presbyterian Food Pantry supplies the soup — making them both a partner and the recipient of every dollar raised.”
All proceeds from the Empty Bowl dinner go directly to the FPC Food Pantry. Tickets to The Empty Bowl Project are $50, children under age 16 are free.
“The goal of the FPC Food Pantry is to make sure no one in our area ever goes to bed hungry,” said FPC Food Pantry Director Sarah Teti. “Achieving this would not be possible without the financial partnership of members of the community and the hard work of our dedicated volunteers who come from every corner of the community.”
