Cranford Community Center

The Rahway River Fly Tyers Group (the RRFT Group) was formed several years ago while it was associated with the Rahway River Trout Unlimited Chapter. During that time, it hosted the March Fly Tying Madness, a day during which 8-10 NJ TU chapters tied about 500 flies to donate to Project Healing Waters (for wounded veterans), Casting for Recovery (for breast cancer survivors) and the National TU Service organization. Over 2,500 flies were donated each year from 2013 thru 2020. The Group also sponsored Casting in the Park, where experienced fly fishers taught beginners how to cast a fly rod, and Fishing with a Friend, for new tyers to be shown how to fish their flies on local waters.

While the TU chapter was disbanded in 2022, the RRFT Group continues to meet twice per month at the Cranford Community Center. These meetings are under the leadership of head tyer Frank (Jake) LaMotta, joined by equally advanced tyer and fly fisher Vinnie Caffarra.

The goal of the Group is to teach fly tying to anyone interested in learning the art. We share proven techniques and fly patterns via free instruction in a relaxed and informal environment. There are no requirements to attend each meeting, and no membership or fees. Anyone under the age of 18, however, must be accompanied by an adult. Further, any requirements set forth by the Cranford Community Center (e.g., face mask protocol) must be adhered to, if necessary.<img src="https://cdn20.patchcdn.com/users/26763252/20260405/031110/rrtu-fly-tying-2___05151108482.jpg" alt="thumbnail">

Finally, on April 28th, Peter Hannon will present on the mission of DKMS, an international non-profit dedicated to the fight against blood cancer and blood disorders. The organization focuses on increasing public awareness, improving treatment access, and expanding the global registry of potential stem cell donors. Peter joined the DKMS professional team in March 2025, but his connection to the cause began nearly a decade earlier when he became a blood stem cell donor in 2016. Our speaker on Tuesday, May 5th, will be Gary Murakami focusing on the exploration of AI image creation in the last few years, including early stages from Adobe Firefly, through experimenting with many websites, to the current state of the art with NightCafe (the “AI Art Generator for AI artists, enthusiasts and content creators”). Many images will be used to give an overview of the creation process, composition, challenges, community, multiple image generation models, video, and additional AI tools. On May 12th, Old Guard member Allen Hamilton will lead a hybrid presentation and group discussion of the American Revolution. Mr. Hamilton has studied many works about the leaders of the revolution and the military campaigns. Topics will include politics; British and colonists; logistics of war; key battles won and lost; and Nathanael Greene, quartermaster, and head of the Southern Command.Allen took early retirement from Exxon to become an independent investment consultant. Allen has served as president of the Association for Advancement of Cost Engineering, and chair of the International Cost Engineering Council. On May 26th, John Tomaszewski will explore the profound biological and philosophical bridge between the objective world and our subjective experience. He will examine how the brain doesn't merely "record" reality like a camera but rather constructs it through a complex process of predictive coding and sensory integration. By deconstructing the neural pathways that translate raw physical data into the vivid landscape of our thoughts and perceptions, we can better understand the unique mental frameworks that define our professional and personal lives. John was a long-time employee at Dun &amp; Bradstreet in computers and engineering and served as director of Marketing Information Systems. Fairview Cemetery & Arboretum

Fairview Cemetery and Arboretum will host a spring arboretum walking tour on April 26&nbsp;at 2 pm, highlighting some of the numerous catalogued species of trees which reside within the Cemetery grounds. The walking tour will be led by Dr. Tom Ombrello, Professor of Biology at Union College, and will provide commentary on specific trees and various historical details. Fairview Cemetery is a member of the American Public Gardens Association (APGA) and is accredited as a level 2 arboretum. 
Those interested are asked to register online at friendsoffairview1.org. Participants should enter through the rear gates on Gallows Hill Road15 minutes prior to the start of the event. Space is limited and registration is on a first come first serve basis. Fairview Cemetery is located at 1100 East Broad Street, Westfield and is open from dawn until dusk. On-premises parking is available.
