Old trees and old-growth forests are currently riding a wave of interest in the scientific world and in culture. Old trees and forests evoke mystery and a call back to earlier times. An appeal of ancient forests is the presence of large trees in one mind’s eye. Excitingly, there is more old-growth forest in the eastern US than thought just a few decades ago. While this is partly due to new perceptions, Dr. Pederson argues&nbsp;that the increase is also due to a combination in the application of growing environmental and ecological sensitivities from the late-1800s, a rational tick to old-growth forest definitions, and time. The value of old-growth forests for people might be fairly obvious. Less obvious is their value to science.

Dr. Pederson will talk about the history of eastern old-growth forests, how tree-ring analysis helped us see overlooked forests, and how old tree and forests help us learn more about the ecological world. Lastly, pictorial examples of some rediscoveries in the region, including Connecticut, will wrap up the evening.
Dr. Neil Pederson is a forest ecologist who has studied trees and old-growth forests across the eastern US and in five regions of Asia over the past 35 years. He has degrees in math, forest biology, forestry, and in earth science, earning his Ph.D. from Columbia University. He was an assistant professor at Eastern Kentucky University and research scientist at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and the Harvard Forest. Currently, he is Highstead Research Affiliate here in Connecticut and a consulting scientist with the Old-Growth Forest Network. He grew up near the Adirondack Mountain State Park and is extremely happy to call Maynard, MA home.The event is free to attend. Registration is required.

The Glass House

Enjoy a summer evening exploring The Glass House at your own pace! During your&nbsp;self-guided visit&nbsp;to the campus, you will have free access to the&nbsp;Glass House, Brick House, Painting Gallery, and Sculpture Gallery.
On view this year in the Painting Gallery&nbsp;is&nbsp;Tomashi Jackson and Robert Rauschenberg: The Catch One. Featuring newly commissioned paintings by Jackson in dialogue with works by Rauschenberg from the historic site’s permanent collection and the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, the exhibition contributes to a global slate of 2025–26 initiatives that reexamine Rauschenberg’s legacy, honoring his expansive creativity, spirit of curiosity, and commitment to change.
In the Sculpture Gallery,&nbsp;encounter&nbsp;the large-scale works by artists including John Chamberlain, Bruce Nauman, and Frank Stella that were collected by Philip Johnson and David Whitney.
Our expert educators will be available across the site to provide information and answer questions.
Please note that all guests&nbsp;will need to exit The Glass House property by 8 PM.

Friday the 17th kicks things off with the sidewalk sale. Local stores set up right outside their doors with once-a-year deals on some of their best inventory. Get there early and you’ll have first pick.
Saturday the 18th is the main event — three streets turned into a pedestrian mall packed with bargains, food, live music, and enough kids’ activities to wear out even the most energetic five-year-old.

Storefronts up and down Elm, Main, and Forest put out their best deals of the year for the sidewalk sale. Bring a bag and budget more time than you think you’ll need — this isn’t a quick stop.

Local nonprofit groups will have tables set up throughout the fair. Stop by, say hello, and hear what they’re working on. It’s a good excuse to learn what’s happening in town beyond the shopping.
The YMCA Family Fun Area
Head to Main and Elm for the YMCA’s Family Fun Area, the go-to spot for kids all weekend. On deck: bungee jumping, airbrush tattoos, a family photo booth, arts and crafts, and prizes.

Fan favorite Gary Sirico returns with his balloon animals — a fair tradition that always draws a crowd. A face painter will be on hand for anyone who wants a new look for the day, and a psychic will be reading for anyone curious what’s next.

Local musicians take over the fair from morning to night:
Celina Savage, followed by the New Canaan Town Band and School of Rock, at South and Elm INtersetion New Canaan Music playing all day on Main Street
Parking Is Free
Every legal parking space downtown is free for the weekend, including the train station and commuter lots. Park anywhere legal and walk in.
